It's not the Clemson I knew anymore.
Peppinos and Nick's are still holding strong.

I was on a conf call teh other day and some dude said

something about a land shark, and he wasn't talking about the beer. That was like 10 seconds of silent comfortableness, because everyone on the call was under 35 (except for me..and him), and had zero idea WT F he was talking about.

I'm just under 35 and have no idea what he was talking about.
Are you sure he didn't say "mudshark", because I know what that is, thanks to Otisman.

Teacher skit was surprisingly modern. Plus....

THERE IS NO FUNNY STUFF to post anymore, that isn't 30 years old. I post the teacher skit because it's a rare spot of good humor in an otherwise humorless PC society.
I found the teacher skit because I read articles where SNL was raked over the coals by the PC crowd for airing it. So naturally I found it and watched. And naturally, if it's attached by the PC crowd, it's funny.

The teacher skit is funny.

But its not 30+ years old. And I'd guess most younger folks have seen it.
Listen to folks references and you can pick out how old they are pretty quick.
If you are referencing obscure skits from a comedy show from the mid 70's, nobody under 40 is going to know WT F you are talking about, and its going to sound weird and embarrassing.
Just like it did in that conference call.

problem. I'm 40. I know the humor if someone says "Who's on first?". Even though that was 40 years before my time, I know the humor. I've seen the skit. Reference that to a kid today, and they're clueless. Reference Eddie Murphy (I just posted) and they're clueless. Again, 40 years, it's the kids.

Kids today not only know all of "their" music, but they know all of mine, as well.
When I was in college I had no idea what 40's or 50's music was.

Went over to a friends house a couple weeks ago.
May 3, 2018, 1:44 PM

|
Their 17 year old daughter and her boyfriend were over. They seemed like pretty sharp kids (his family is rich, so that's nice for her I guess), and know a ton of "old" music. The boyfriend was all about some grunge and Nirvana. The girl named off some Zeppelin stuff she liked. But what do they really, really like? Rap/hip-hop. They were playing stuff I had never ever heard of. She said that's all her friends listen to.

I guess I can relate, I know most songs if I hear them, but
May 3, 2018, 1:52 PM

couldn't tell you who they're by or when they came out. Listen mostly to rap, except on the boat...and usually that's just whatever comes on no shoes radio. As previously mentioned, I'm kind of a psycho in that regard though, I'll drive around all day in the boat or car with the radio off. My wife would play music 24/7, I'd be OK if I never heard another song.

About 85% of it is over 10 years old. But I do listen to some new music. Spotify is the way to go BTW. I'm done forking over $1.69 per song to download it.

But aside from that..Lots of all-nighters in data centers drove me to that.
Ever work late? What do they always feed you? Pizza.
They could have been feeding me Kobe beef prepared medium rare, and any normal person would get sick of it after a while.
And now, there's just a Pavlovian reaction that every time someone mentions pizza, it makes me think I'm going to be working straight thru for the next 3 days.

It hasn't ever been crowded since it opened. We went once just for something different and the service was so bad that we didn't even end up having to pay.
Joe's pizza is also so overpriced I'm not sure anyone ever goes there a second time.

Good question. How long does a place have to be open
May 3, 2018, 11:25 AM
|
|
to qualify?
Places that did not last long during my years there (or soon afterward) - Sourdough's and Taco Tico in the Mini Mall - heck - the Mini Mall itself. The Canteen in the Logia - I have no idea when that closed.

A place can have an impact without being around for 20 years. Maybe Mellow Mushroom being a chain gives me more pause than it only being around 15 years give or take.

From the Clemson wiki...
May 3, 2018, 2:04 PM
[ in reply to Good question. How long does a place have to be open ] |
|
It was Chick filet for a while, and a sub place (Lil dinos?) and then maybe a taco bell , but I could be confusing that with the one from East Campus.
Wiki:
The canteen was a university-operated snackbar and small convenience store that was located on the fifth level of the Johnstone Hall complex, in the Union area, directly underneath the Loggia. As originally constructed in 1954, both it and the main entrances to Harcombe Commons dining hall faced a concrete assembly area for the still-military college. This area was dug out in the mid-1970s for construction of the Student Government offices and the Union gamerooms.
The canteen offered standard hamburger, hotdog and soft drink fare. A popular order was the "suicide", a half-cola, half-lemon-lime mix that seemed to enhance the carbonation. Breakfast orders were also served, and it was Tiger Band tradition for many years to go get breakfast there after Saturday morning practice on game days. In the days before ATMs, the canteen was one of the few places available to cash a check on campus (another being the student bank at the Bursar's Office in Sikes Hall). Some school supplies and garb were available from the dry goods counter. A jukebox was on the premises, and a television was mounted on the south end of the dining area. The first commercial video game to appear in the area arrived in the winter of 1975 when an Atari Pong game was installed in the canteen.
By the 1980s, the military school-heritage canteen had become outdated, an anachronism left from another era in school history, and it was eventually closed as the long-time managers aged and retired. The space was farmed out to the contract companies and remodelled into the eatery it is today.

But if you are putting a chain restaurant that MauldinT will stand you up at as part of your famous school bars/restaurants that speaks to larger problems.

I'd categorize MauldinT as more of an annoyance than a problem.
