The problem witih Chad Morris' system

isn't necessarily the turnovers, it's that our defense never gets to rest when it's a short drive. Sure everything's all fine and good for the defensive boys and they dont' get tired and stuff when there is a 14 play 72 yard drive that ends up scoring 3 points (via FG) or 7 points (via TD + PAT) but when it's a short play those boys get gassed you know what I mean.
I think if things slowed down a good bit that BV would be able to coach the defense better.

If you didn't know we had the #1 ranked defense in the country, you didn't follow clemson football much this past season.

I get what you're saying, but when you run that offense and

actually SCORE points, you put the burden on the other team's shoulders. Besides, I think we're all expecting Venables to have the players stacked at every position making rotating them a possibility. I also think Venables isn't having trouble coaching the defense due to speed

Heard this a lot, but it really doesn't work that way. Any offense, no matter the pace, if they get a lot of 3 and outs their defense will get gassed. If you put together first downs, they will not. Doesn't really matter if the D get an extra 30-45 seconds of rest from a 3 play series. The defense needs the O to move the ball for rest with any kind of offense.

Defensive depth is critical when you've got a high-powered offense. That was one of the worst things about Cole's struggles last year. The offense was so bad that we needed our defense to be incredible in order to win games. This meant we had to have our #1 guys in as much as possible in order to avoid an insurmountable error by a non-starter.
The offensive struggles also meant our starters had to play entire games (looking at Boston College, Syracuse, Wake Forest...heck maybe even Georgia Tech & Louisville), whereas if DW was healthy, odds are second guys would be playing the entire 4th quarter and they would probably be peppered in normal sets since there would have been a larger margin for error.

Haven't we already been through this? No coach in their right mind would elect to play defense first.

I could be wrong but "stop scoring so fast" isn't an argument that's going to gain a lot of traction at Clemson. As for BV's coaching, he shuts down the run, the outside, over the top and all the slant action...not to mention my personal favorites TFL's and Sacks. Short of providing Boulware with hand grenades and a machete....not sure how scoring slower is going to help Venables coaching.
On another note, breaking out the Arkansas polio weed before one posts....can often lead to threads like this.
Go Tigers!

That is the problem with all the fast paced offenses. Urban Meyer seems to balance it out the best. He runs fast paced, but he does not score quickly. He keeps the opposing teams D on the field a lot. Morris went 3 and out way too often. When he scored, it was too often a quick score and a short series. We need to start dominating time of possession.

Yes, and that worked out super well for our defense up until this year, didn't it? The year when we had 8 or 9 guys who started as sophomores were seniors.
Thanks for the input, Coot!

Careful what you ask for...

...if things were to "slow down a good bit", we would hard-pressed to bring in the stud offensive talent we currently have (and have coming). They want to play in this type system, and it's working out pretty darn well on both sides of the ball IMO.
