Steele's numbers at Clemson as DC
Jan 15, 2015, 7:18 AM

As you know by now, former Clemson DC and Alabama LB coach Kevin Steele is now the DC at LSU.
His numbers at Clemson are not that impressive. He started out good and then regressed
Clemson in total defense in Steele's four seasons: 2009: 12th 2010: 19th 2011: 71st 2012: 64th

I hate "grammer" - or what it does to the average mind - doesn't everyone?

season, right? So, the slight improvement was Venables first year. Steele inherited a good D and took it down the drain. Can't believe that Miles hied him after his Clemson numbers but they call Miles the Mad Hatter for a reason!

Two major things here:
Jan 15, 2015, 8:31 AM
|
|
Steele's defense was good when we didn't have Chad Morris's HUNH offense producing sub 2 minute drives. When he came in, Steele's aggressive style of man-to-man coverage and frequent linebacker blitzes became very vulnerable to fatigue. It was also vulnerable to the QB run. This is Steele's style of defense, and it was EXACTLY what Dabo wanted. Unfortunately, that doesn't work well with HUNH and Dabo and co had to learn that the hard way.
The second issue was poor LB recruiting. In Steele's final year, the LBs we had were not very good and were quite a liability. This led to extra vulnerability to the QB run and to plays like jet sweeps (see WVU). One major difference Venables has been able to enjoy is the increase in quality at LB through recruiting (Anthony, Steward, Boulware, etc).

talent that we were putting on the field. I don't think he's as good as those 12th and 19th ranked D's or as bas as the 71st and 64th. One thing is for sure though - he will have better talent to work with at LSU than what he had in his last 2 seasons at Clemson so there won't be any excuses for him there.

My thing with Steele is that it doesn't matter how talented your guys are, you have to have talented guys AND Luke Kuechly field-general types in order to make the pre-snap adjustments and such he was asking those guys to make.
Never again do I care to see my Mike backer looking back at the safeties when the ball is snapped. That got old fast.

I called them the "Keystone Kops" due to the way they looked before every snap. The WORST D I have ever witnessed on any team in my entire life.

That Nationally televised lung-ripping cost him his job. (WVU could have scored 90 if they wanted to...)

I will say if not for a good D 2010 could have been a 2 win season. But the last 2 years our D about every play was out of place and confused.

More relevant stat is yards per game
Jan 16, 2015, 6:41 PM
|
|
We played 14 games in 2011, so the total defense is naturally going to be worse that year than in the others. If you look at yards per game, 2012 was worse than 2011.
