Update on search for new Women's Basketball coach

Apr 3, 2018, 10:24 AM

I've spent a little time looking at possible candidates from various mid-major programs such as Liberty, Mercer and Buffalo, but I hope DRad can provide an update of some sort at the "Prowl & Growl" gatherings later this month. We need to hire the best candidate, but at the same time recognize Spring recruiting is really important to establish an identity among upcoming recruits. I would prefer hiring an established coach over an assistant from a major program who has never been a head coach. Any updates or comments welcomed.

if the UVa coach could get her adoption complete in time for a hire......not likely though

Lets look for a Mid Major coach who has had their program hovering around the .500 mark for the last 3 seasons. Its worked wonders the last few coaches.

Recent history supports this isn't likely to happen....

The more likely outcome is they'll hire some coach from a mediocre (at best) program who is willing
to take the job for the money Clemson is prepared to pay, and in three or four years, we'll be right back here having this exact same discussion.

Do this thing right the first time.I would go after the top assistants from teams in the elite 8.Especially those that recruit at a high level.Let those individuals know Clemson is serious about women's basketball.Stay away from mid major coaches. We need to be deliberate in our attempt to acquire a good coach.

It will be interesting to see how the AD plays this.

Women’s basketball is a money loser, and is not ever going to generate a huge amount of fan interest. However, we should strive to be competitive in the ACC and nationally. I don’t know enough about women’s basketball to know how much of a difference exists between what we have recently been paying coaches and what top ACC programs pay their coaches. If it’s only a few hundred thousand a year different, then we should pony up the money. However, if it’s much more than that, I’d rather go the mid-major or assistant route and apply that extra money toward our men’s basketball program.
