The $CU alma mater includes thre words, "Here's A Health, Carolina"
Over the years the custom was started (in an attempt to copy or have something similar to what Clemson does) of raising the right hand, with fingers cupped, when the phrase "Here's A Health, Carolina" occurs, as if offering a toast.

I guess ya'll never watched Mash. Radar was trying to take his GED test and Col. Blake was giving him the test. He told Radar to sit down. Then he asked Radar if he was comfortable. Radar started to spell the word, when Col. Blake told him it was a rhetorical question. Radar replied, "Oh I don't answer those." Col Blake asked. "you don't answer what?" and then Radar said, "Rhetoricals." It was funny as hell if you ever saw it, but I guess ya'll never did.

One of the small number of their fans at the end of our game in November was standing nearby doing that. My 10 year old son turned to me and said "what is she doing?"
I think it is supposed to be like they are raising a toast to Carolina and the hand motion is, like you said, supposed to be like they are holding a chalice. It kind of seemed snooty to me (maybe that was their intent for putting that in place).
