New Story: Spence to sign as preferred walk-on

Spence to sign as preferred walk-on

Alex Spence, Clemson's 2014 kicker commitment out of West Florence, has already proven to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney that he can be a team player. Spence will pay his own way to school next fall while he waits for a scholarship to come free. Full Story »

Does this now free up a scholarship?

Feb 4, 2014, 10:59 AM

With Spence now going as a preferred walk-on, is the class capable of admitting one more scholarship player or were already oversigning at this point?

The walk-on and grey shirt thing confuse me

Are we reserving scholarships for people that we HOPE to get like Yeargin? I guess if some of the people we're trying to convince don't come we'll give a spot to Spence?

I think in Spence's case it is a little more than a preferred walk on.. they are not generally guaranteed a scholarship. I think Spence has been told he will get the scholarship in January.
If he signed the letter of intent he would not be able to enroll at Clemson until January. Like the Davis brothers who will enroll in January. They are going to Tri county tech in August.
We have at least 3 preferred walk ons this fall.

Sounds like Spence is the most preferred walk-on

so he'll get the first scholly that comes free.

We've had some great kickers come to us as walk-ons

Feb 4, 2014, 11:56 AM

Personally, unless the kicker in question is absolutely phenom (Dale Hatcher, Chris Gardocki, etc.) I wish we'd give all our prospective kickers a chance to prove themselves before putting them on scholarship.

Kicking game is too important not to get the best kickers you can get.. and that means giving scholarships.
Holtz had your attitude toward kickers and that might work at ND but it did not work at USC and i do not think it will work at Clemson. Spence is a really good kicker and a strong leg. I expect him to red shirt unless he starts next year.

I totally agree ... IF you get the best ones ... we had 3-4

Feb 4, 2014, 10:28 PM

on scholarship at one time a few years ago and none of them were great.

If Spence is that good, he'll prove it and earn his scholarship quickly.

Honestly,we haven't been too effective at landing those really great ones through scholarship.

Many if not most of our best kickers historically and recently have come over from the soccer program.
