A star football player at South Carolina by the name of Bubba was about to flunk out his senior year. Word had gotten out that he would attend graduation but would not get a diploma. At the graduation ceremony, the student body rose as one and started the chant, "PASS BUBBA, PASS BUBBA". Dr. Pastides, feeling the intense pressure, asked BUBBA to rise for one last chance to pass and be awarded his degree, with all appropriate rights and honors, blah blah blah and whatever that means. BUBBA rose and the student body became silent. The president said, "Bubba, for your final chance to graduate, I have a very difficult question for you. Can you spell the word “CAROLINA?”
BUBBA thought and thought and finally began. "C" "A" “R” “O" "L" … "I" … Bubba stopped. The student body began murmuring, fearful that Bubba would fail. Finally, he continued, "N" and after another pause completed his test with an uncertain "A?"
President Pastides took a deep breath and sighed, grateful that he would be able to bend to the pressure and award this degree. To his surprise, a groan arose from the student body and turned into a chant, "PASS BUBBA ANYWAY! PASS BUBBA ANYWAY!"
