Does it make any sense for sec to allow their teams to play a playoff game against a team from another conference on New Years but not to allow non conf rivalry games on thanksgiving?

no. the acc gave them an opening to preserve the rivalries w acc teams and they refused. That aspect should be remembered for a long time by the ACC.
