We sometimes forget how good James Davis was

Nov 6, 2014, 11:56 AM

I know we always talk about Spiller and Ellington...James Davis started it all for us when it came to getting good RBs. Go back and watch some of his memorable games. He was an absolute stud.

By far the BEST Davis Brother. Not even close.***

Davis did not improve during his career unfortunately***

He improved his pass catching.

Nov 6, 2014, 2:08 PM

And he was a pretty darn good rb to start with.

Davis would have had multiple 1000 yard seasons had he not had to split carries with Spiller.

Davis got hurt, and while he played through it, he was never really the same.

He got that nerve stinger against Georgia Tech in that game where he and Spiller absolutely ran roughshod...I want to say Davis had something like 240 yards rushing or something ridiculous like that.

After that JD was still good, but the coaches had to really watch his carries and there were times he had to come out when his shoulder took a hit. It hurt his draft stock a bunch and he re-injured it in Cleveland and that was pretty much it for his NFL career.

It's the big reason Mike Davis (and apparently, Brandon Wilds as well) are basically locks to leave early for the NFL. Especially with Marcus Lattimore soon to return to South Carolina as yet another reminder of how injuries can derail a RB's career. RB's need to go pro the second they can; they only have so much tread on their tires, and when it's gone, it's gone.

Sorry I'm a huge Clemson fan but Mike is better. Mike will have a good career in the NFL James didn't have the speed for his tall build

My favorites ever were Terry Allen and Terrence Flagler***

We need one of those SUMO guys for short yardage situations

Nov 6, 2014, 12:58 PM

when we really have to get a 1st down.

They have body mass, explosive power, and balance....an excellent combination!

Don't forget Merriweather

Nov 6, 2014, 2:06 PM

He sort of got lost in the mix when Davis came on board and then Spiller. But Merriweather carried the team in a win over power Miami. He was also the best power back of the three but was greatly underused esp in short yardage situations.

It was sickening when Bowden and the OC took him out of Usuc

game when he was running roughshod over them because they were afraid to upset the freshman James Davis, who also stated he could not believe they took him out. That led to a loss - the ###### "mad scientist" who should have been a coot, since he was so chicken and Bowden wasn't much better!

Re: We sometimes forget how good James Davis was

James Davis is the best rb in Clemson history imo (im 23). I can still see him running thru fsu during the bowden bowl days. I started watching football in the travis zachary era, and I loved him. Merriweather was good. Under utilized, especially his senior year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Remember NC State 2005? He went to work that game.***

the best. He has some run-ins with Ken Hatfield over not playing when he was injured, but when he was on the field he produced. If her had been healthy for three years (or four), I think he would own some records.

and Canadian football has way less rushing attempts because they only play 3 downs, which forces you to be more pass-heavy.

Really?

Nov 6, 2014, 6:03 PM

Only reason folks wanna talk Ellington, is because of where he is now.
Not sure too many folks have forgotten Davis, but...no, he didn't start it all with
good backs. Goes back alotttt further than that.

Terry Allen,Kenny Flowers,Terrence Flagler, Ronald Williams, Kevin Mack,Raymond Priester...
to name a few.

along with Spiller, Ellington...and the great JAMES DAVIS.
