Why do we always find out about obscure rules

during Clemson games ...
This week it was the QB slide ...
I'm pretty sure the ball has always been spotted where the QB went down. And I've watched a lot of football.

I've always understood it to be from the start of the slide

It is also my understanding that if a defender hits a sliding QB for any reason other than being blocked into him by an offensive player, it is considered a targeting foul and automatic ejection.
That's probably the main reason that the QB is down from the start of the slide.
If I'm wrong someone in the know please speak up.

I'll have to review the video, but I believe a Pack defender DID hit TL (not real hard, though) after he went down.

Agree, but from start of slide, not start of “leap” ...

I think the QB should be fair game until he actually contacts the ground.
While he’s in the air, it’s hard to understand why he would be considered “down” ...

But the trade-off is an automatic targeting call if hit...

during the slide, so committing to the slide is "giving himself up", end of play, and a defenseless player status.

If you go feet first, it is where the slide started. If you go head first, it is wherever you touch the ground first (except for a hand). TL just needs to learn to go head first if he has room. Do that earlier so they cant get a hit on you and you still get the extra yardage.
However, according to the Syracuse game, I do not blame him one bit going feet first. And unless the game was on the line, I would not care if he ended up a yard short every time he did it because good gosh, I feel like we can score on every drive with him in the game.

I didn’t realize that either but TL’s post game comments made me

think he knew the rule and just thought he had the first down. He did not. I’m fine with the rule...of course, I’m a little sensitive about protecting our QB since we’ve become a bit thin at that position.

The rule has been this way for a good while from what I can remember. It makes sense as others have said as it gives no reason for a defender to try and hit the sliding QB in order to limit his yardage on the slide.

I knew the rule existed

but I'm with you, I rarely see it enforced. Case in point, the ref was going to give him the extra yard. The only reason they re-spotted it was because of the review for the first down. If that happens on any other down or if it's not a first down run the field officials would have given him the slide.
I'm fine with the rule being enforced as written, but the refs need to understand it and enforce it better apparently.

The other rule I didn't know was about the catch with toe down inside but heel on line means no good. Must have 2 touches which is either toe and heel or a toe drag!
