Serious Question: Why do you hate your rival?

Jan 20, 2014, 9:23 PM

My hatred for the coots hit an all time high after the last football game with them. So much so that I went off on a long time friend who happens to be a coot. After that I decided that I was going to turn over a new leaf, and while cheering for them is never an option, I wanted to at least not hate everything garnet. I even asked some coots I know why they hated us; their response, because Clemson fans are jerks. Funny, that's why I hate them.

What sez you?

I guess to be honest, Coot fans I do not know are jerks. To be honest, once I get to know some of them, they are pretty nice folks.

I good friends with a few

Jan 20, 2014, 9:28 PM

For some it is more important than anything in life. Thus they attach their own self worth to the performance of their favorite football team. This leads to the classic well if we aren't good I'll tear down everyone around me to make myself feel better. Coots aren't good and live around CU fans. A breed of them forged by their mediocrity have made it their mission to hate CU almost more than they love SCAR.

Misery loves company.

That's a good reason to be mindful of the associations you make.

We usually become an average of the people we surround ourselves with, so choose wisely.

The rivalry is more culturally rooted than anything. To be honest, my hate for the actual South Carolina team isn't that strong. They are a rival, and I would like to beat them; their fans are a completely different story. The South Carolina fans are complete #####. I've never met a fan base so rude and arrogant as the gamecock fans. After going to my first S.Carolina - Clemson game in 2012, I was shocked by what I saw. The biggest thing I remember was after the game. SCAR fans were in our lot, tearing open trash bags and dumping trash all over the parking lot, and onto cars. Need I say more?

Jan 20, 2014, 10:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Serious Question: Why do you hate your rival? ]

I think that kind of behavior goes both ways. The last time we played in Athens, there was a large group of Clemson fans I was completely ashamed of. I was hanging out with some Ga. fans I know (that gave me tickets by the way) before the game. The entire group of people in that area were nice folks. There was some good natured picking between them and myself, but they (even) the ones I had never met before) were nice people. A group of about 50 younger, half drunk, Clemson fans came through cussing at the Ga. tailgaters, trying to start fights, talking all kind of moronic trash, and being just in general thugs.
I guess my point is all schools have an element of their fan base who are complete jerks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very easy for me as I don't, and won't, have coot friends.

Re: Serious Question: Why do you hate your rival?

Jan 20, 2014, 10:11 PM

I think its the coot fans we hate/can't stand, more than the actual Coot team. If it wasn't for an idiotic fan base and a trash dump of a city and stadium, it would probably just be a pretty normal rivalry without so much hatred. But they make it hard not to hate them.

That is a fine perspective you have there

Jan 20, 2014, 10:12 PM

At one point USC fans hated Clemson fans because they were sore winners. Clemson fans hated Carolina fans because they were sore losers.

Now USC fans hate Clemson fans because they are sore losers. Clemson fans hate Carolina fans because they're sore winners.

Guess we hate each other, just because that's what we are supposed to do.

Trooperdel and Rusty the Rooster and some other gamecock fans personal insults here. I never got into the rivalry when I attended Clemson. I just took a win for granted over them and was on my way. In fact when I first got on this board, I was annoyed by those Clemson fans that bickered with the gamecock ones and wanted peace and harmony. Hard to believe I become what I hated, but now that's how I roll with it and play the game the hardest!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a vicious cycle. I've got some shamecock friends and

Jan 21, 2014, 12:22 AM

when it comes down to it...they are some great guys. But as soon as the subject of football is brought up, it's like a heavy tension is all the sudden present.

At times, I have to sit back a laugh at the whole thing. The fact that IT IS just a game and that these are teens just playing a sport, trying to make it big time. But then I get caught up in the verbal punches by the 'bad guys.' In the end, it is fun to talk smack, but I think it'd be a little more fun if it wasn't a five game losing streak...

toward our gridiron endeavors, which then was lackluster by both programs. Surprisingly, there was a good bit of cooperation in other pursuits between the two schools and campus organizations.

Having lived in the Columbia area for over 40 years, the fact is many of my closest friends and business associates have been and are Gamecock alumni or fans, and we never let our loyalties affect our relationships, although we joke with each other at times.

Most of the rabble-rousing is on the internet sites or program-affiliated radio, but frankly, I suspect many people are just too busy with work and other chores to engage in verbal-sparring all day with opponents.

Thus, all these years, I've chosen to concern myself with Clemson's efforts...and let others worry about their own programs. However, I'll add that like every other CU fan, the "peating" business needs to come to a screeching halt!

Disdain. For them, it's envy. It's why they complain so much about Dabo's "rant". He held the mirror up to them and they did not like what they saw.

I had a close group of friends growing up

Jan 21, 2014, 7:17 AM

There were about 10 of us. We played sports through high school together. After high school we hung out all the time. Partied, played poker, went fishing, etc....

All were gamecock fans except a couple of us. We couldn't do ANYTHING, ANYTHING without at some point arguing about the rivalry. We actually got to the point of fighting a few times.

Now that I've grown up a little bit and been around fans of other teams from other parts of the country I've realized there is no rivalry out there that is as heated as the Clemson/Scar rivalry and I think its great. I work with a couple guys, one pulls for Ohio St., the other Michigan. They think we're all crazy. They actually pull for each other when they aren't playing.

Fantastic answer, Geeville. I have many friends and several family members who are coots. We have an unspoken rule to just not talk about IT. It always, and I do mean always, end up arguing about IT. It's rather silly.......but there it is.

including the school itself.

I went to Willy B for the first time this past season, being in the band.

From the moment we got there to well after we left it was horrid. When our buses pulled up about 10 yards from the stadium, we couldn't get out to unload our gear and walk in because an angry mob surrounded our busses, beer bottle raining down. The Columbia police told our band director that we could either do our thing here or go home, that fans would be fans. We had to get SLED to intervene, and the best they could do was set us up about a mile away from the stadium. The coot police then led us through the coot tailgaters. We got the last laugh because Tiger Band ended up crossing the Coot bands parade route which ruined their entire pregameshow.

Inside there was nothing but hostility and ignorance from all the fans. About every 5 minutes a group of coots would walk by throwing things or swearing at us.

I remember the coot band played a bluegrass themed halftime show, and at the end a video came up on their jumbotron with a redneck looking guy in a Clemson shirt and cocky. Cocky asked him to spell "gamecocks" and the guy spelled out "g-a-m-e-c-o-c-k-s-eei-eei-oh!".
During the game there was also a commercial on that told fans "not to litter" and featured cocky running around tackling people and attacking them, one clip showed cocky beating the mess out of a man with a baseball bat while his daughter watched.

When we were leaving the same coot police escorted us out. While several gamecocks fans would throw things at us, sometimes jumping in our parade blockto throw punches, try to steal some of our gear, and berate us, the cops would shrug it off. I distinctly remember our band director screaming at one of these cops who stood idly by and blew it off. Meanwhile a group of clemson fans started giving us band members high fives, and said policeman who blew off our band director turned around and tazed one Clemson fan while another cop beat another Clemson fan with a nightstick. The Clemson fans were then handcuffed and thrown into a squad car.. for high fiving Tiger Band. (Meanwhile a female clarinet player got a punch in the face by a 50 something drunk carolina fan).

Its the fact that these people are so ignorant that they believe it is 100% okay to act like this and encourage this behavior. Its even more infuriating when the University itself promotes it.

Re: Its the mentality that everything in that fanbase exudes

Jan 21, 2014, 4:21 PM

WOW that is a crazy story. I became a Carolina fan because that is how Clemson fans acted while I was growing up and I can't stand people like that. This is not how Carolina fans really are. Unfortunately with Carolina's recent success we have gained a lot of fair weather fans with mouth and attitude. I think the best way to say it is that no one really hates there rival but they hate there rivals stupid fans. Every team has those stupid fans that are crazy about there team. So I guess I don't really hate Clemson or even Clemson fans. I just hate idiots. Sorry for your terrible time in William Brice. If this really happened then I would say Clemson's band would be in its rights to press charges against the Cola Police department or at least the officers involved. Its hard to believe that this is legit if it were there would have already been something done legally.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL "this is not how Carolina fans really are"

Jan 21, 2014, 4:30 PM

I'm from Columbia...trust me, it is. I remember going to Willy B as a ten year old kid in the mid-90s and getting harassed by adult fans. Every time I've gone back since (probably five or six times), similar experience of constant harassment by obnoxious, in your face fans (while I ALWAYS keep my mouth shut). Trust me, this isn't a new phenomenon. Not saying Clemson doesn't have its share of idiots either but don't act like USC was the epitome of class and high-society until Spurrier came along.

smug and arrogant and usually condescending about Clemson.

Stems from their amazing run of 12 or however many years in a row of finishing in the top 5.

Then - semihole fans completely disappeared while the end of Bowden and the start of Jimbo was happening.

Now - they are good again and the smugness and arrogance is back worse than ever.
