Nickel came first I think. Nickel adds one more DB in place of an LB or DL - thus "5" pass defenders on the field. Dime adds 2 more pass defenders for total of 6 DBs.

5 defensive backs and dime means using 6 defensive backs. These are used vs pass heavy offenses with many faster options as receivers. Usually LBs are removed in lieu of the extra DBs bit sometimes even a DL.

You trying to give away our defensive secrets ? There's already too much pressure after our UNCheat loss that felt like a win . Squash it .

The dime defense is a defensive alignment that uses six defensive backs. The nickel uses 5.

Dime defense would be Washington St, and a nickel defense would be South Cootalina.

Just random monetary based names placed into the college game to try to make people subconsciously realize that the schools are making money off of the games and not the players.

So if we are playing a 3-3-5 defense but one of the safeties plays up, is it still a Nickel?

To me, the "Dime" defense ain't worth a "Nickel."

I have never understood why coaches will go away from what has worked all game long, and go into the "Dime" or "Prevent" defense at the end of games. More often than not, it "prevents" the leading team from winning, because they allow the other team to quickly dink and dunk their way down the field and get into range for a winning field goal, or even touchdown. Houston Texans have cost DW4 several wins this way.

Simple explanation...
Oct 3, 2019, 3:23 PM
|
|
Nickel = five defensive backs. A DB comes in and replaces a LB. This formation ordinarily consists of five defensive backs, four down linemen, and two linebackers. The fifth defensive back is called the "nickelback".
Dime = six defensive backs. This formation consists of six defensive backs (usually two safeties, and four cornerbacks), and has either four down linemen and one linebacker, or three down linemen and two linebackers. The sixth defensive back is called the "dimeback".

Nickel is 5 backs. The 4-2 is a nickel defense that you used to see often. Now you see more 3-3. Dime is 6 backs.

This should help, Coach Bob Davey explains the coverages and when they are used.
http://a.espncdn.com/ncf/columns/davie/1460709.html
The "Cover" packages are also worth learning about. Georgia got burned against "Bama when the cover 2 deep back bit to the middle of the field vs his responsibility of outside back.... result Tua mania...
