Getting Ready to Light 98 Candles

Early on the morning of Nov. 25, 1921, the stork alit on the roof of a house in a small town in North Florida and that's when I made my grand appearance on this wonderful earth, Several years later my Mother told me I was so awe struck when I arrived I did not speak a word until I was several months old but that I soon made up for the lost time. Heck, I didn't walk until I was about 10 months old.
35,794 days !!!! And I've never had a bad day in my life but must confess some were not as good as the others. Just imagine, if I averaged eight hours of sleep each night over that span of 98 years, that means I spent almost 33 years sleeping. Seems like a lot of wasted time there.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge during my lifetime. I have millions of fond memories that can never be erased from my memory bank. Unfortunately, their are some I wish I could erase. The places I have been, the things I have seen, the people who have touched my life, the joys and sorrows I have experienced are among the many things that have shaped my life. Over time, I have come to appreciate those things we too often take for granted.
Every night I thank God for another wonderful day even though I don't feel worthy of his blessings. And every morning I thank God for bringing me safely through the night and for the opportunity to get out of bed. Every day is a gift, it's as if Christmas is occurring every day of the year.
I am blessed by having relatively good health but not to the extent I plan to run marathons or climb high mountains. I am finally having to admit I have to change my lifestyle to conform to the fact my body is not the same as it was during my younger days. I still drive but recently decided to confine my driving to the daylight hours.
Never in my fondest dreams did I imagine reaching this age. I have no secret formula I can share with you but I do believe laughter is important and good for the soul. Learning to love and to share that love freely will add joy to your life and to those who receive that love. Hate is a cancer that dwells in the heart of the hater and not in the one to whom the hate is directed.
Well, I had best close this epistle and get some much needed rest. Blowing out 98 candles sounds like an all day job for me. And if one of my best buddies was still living I know just what he would say, "not to worry, you have plenty of hot air to do the job".

Have the greatest birthday ever Joe. Life is an unbelievable blessing that many take for granted and, as we age, we all realize how lucky we have been. For some of us, though, it becomes too easy to dwell on the not-so-good days and forget that we are indeed blessed to wake up to another day. A sign on my firebase in Nam had a picture of Snoopy from Peanuts doing his famous dance and proclaiming that "HAPPINESS IS..... WAKING UP AND SEEING THAT YOU LIVED THROUGH THE NIGHT". Warm congratulations and a very Happy #98!
Joe, I wish you would grant a small request from those of us who are "youngsters" (as for me - mid 60s - and I'm sure many around my age and those older and younger). We still love learning and being coached by a wiser and more experienced traveler.
It would certainly be great if we could tap into some of your general thoughts, observations, lessons learned (whether the easy or hard way), etc. I would love to hear your perspective on the passage of time, sound financial goals to aim for or pitfalls to avoid, things you now know are important and those that aren't, the role faith has played throughout your journey, and possibly, what you consider important in retirement - if you do in fact believe in retirement.
These are just ideas. Please feel free to ignore them or address them, and please add any you believe would help members of younger generations (like me) who think we know a lot. I ,for one, keep discovering I do not.

Every year when my family celebrated Thanksgiving, as we held hands before we prayed, Dad would always ask each of us to verbally express one thing we were thankful for. That tradition was also a yearly occurrence in my bride's family up here in North Carolina.
On this Monday, before Thanksgiving, as I head off to bed for my nightly nap and before my prayers are said . . .

Happy Birthday Joe!! I hope you have so many more. I love your stories and hope you have jotted down your wonderful memories to be shared by your family. When I was younger I had birthday months, then it shrank to birthday weeks as I couldn’t celebrate that long, now I have a birthday day; however, I believe you have earned an extra day or so to blow out those candles, if not you may want a fire extinguisher close by. Again Happy Birthday to one of the BEST Tiger man I have yet to meet.

I add my sincerest wishes that your latest birthday will be followed by at least a couple more. There are not that many of "The Greatest Generation" still around that I can thank "in-person" for preserving the freedom of this great country that I and others are so fortunate to live in. Your stories out here on the TNet bring home the reality of what war really was, and the costs involved.

I personally thank you for that B-Meist, and who could ever be more deserving of a free lifetime membership to T-Net than JOE, I don't know of anyone right now, but Bill and hartins is probably close to being due!!! But that was an awesome gift for Joe, and very deserving IMO, Thank You!!!
