Covid immunity ?

Jul 14, 2020, 5:34 PM

Not looking good for it to be long term, suggesting several shot a year.

Maskers. You have to wear it forever now. No take-backs.

Yup, no problem. Once you non maskers croak it will spread far less.

How does that figure into the virus...

Jul 14, 2020, 6:21 PM

mutating to become more contagious and less deadly. Typically, that's how a virus changes.

Bugs do usually mutate that way - mostly because a virus that is too lethal kills off its potential hosts, and thus, possibilities for itself to replicate further - but there's still an acre we don't know about COVID-19. For starters, my understanding is that COVID-19 is a single-helix RNA virus, compared to the double-helix you see in the flu bug. That would normally be a good thing because single-helix viruses don't usually mutate as fast as double-helix ones, but the trick with COVID is that the strand of RNA is extremely long and complex and thus is apparently capable of mutating significantly more rapidly than your typical single-strand virus.

My understanding is also that the extremely long RNA strand means it's a complicated bug with potentially far more effects than your normal bug as well. We definitely don't yet have a real grasp on this thing's full capabilities, lethality, or even communicability.

Be interested to hear any medical professionals weigh in here. I'm getting the idea this may be something we have to live with for awhile.

Bear in mind my virology classes were approaching a decade ago, but I think RNA viruses acquire and keep mutations faster than DNA. And there is a general inverse correlation between genome size and mutation rate.

Covid is a really long RNA virus and apparently encodes for a “proofreading” protein that most rna viruses won’t have. The really interesting things are how it binds to ACE-II receptors and uses a protease in human cells called furin to cleave it’s spike protein and allow it into the cell to start taking over our machinery. That explains the systemic nature of the disease, because furin is found in lungs, blood vessel lining, and the GI tract among others.

Hopeful a vaccine that is effective and widely available comes out soon, that will be the way out of this.

I’ve seen you post this a couple times now. I’ve read about the spike protein mutation that’s seen one strain become more transmissible. Where are you seeing info about a less virulent mutation?
