One thing you notice since we've been heading up to Cashiers/Highlands over the last 50 years is the large number of Confederate flags per capita in the area. I've actually driven through the tiny little town of Salem, SC(population 151) and counted 8 Confederate flags flying proudly high atop flag poles in the 5 minutes it takes to drive through town.
Clemson is an inclusive island in the sea of of Northeastern GA, Northwestern NC and Northern SC.

We played Temassee Salem HS in basketball. The Black players and cheerleader would not go to the game because the crowd would scream racial insults the whole game and harass them getting on and off the bus.
That was over 30 years ago - I guess things haven’t changed much.
