Observations made from Texas A&M vs NWST
Aug 31, 2018, 12:32 AM
|
|
First of all I want to say that it will be a long night for the Aggies come Saturday of next week. Clemson should stomp the mess out of them pretty easily. Now, I know that they won handily tonight, and rightfully so because it was against a junior varsity highschool team. I also know that Jimbo Fisher's play calling was extremely vanilla tonight. However, I'm not looking at their play calling or any of that. Here's what I noticed that makes me think that Clemson will blow them away in College Station next week.
1. Northwestern State was able to gain penetration almost every play when Texas A&M had the ball. NWST had very small players, and they do NOT match up against Clemson in any regard.
Verdict: Their offensive line is mediocre at best.
2. The Aggies running back corps was substandard in my opinion.
Verdict: Our Line Backers will eat them up.
3. The Aggies passing game was decent when under pressure. However, Clemson's pass rush is leagues above NWST's passing rush. Not only were NW defensive ends able to set the edge and rush off the edge, but they were able to flood up the middle and get to the quarterback repeatedly.
Verdict: If NWST's defensive front could penetrate at will then Clemson's front 7 will be able to eat all night long. I predict a whole lot of sacks, and interceptions.
4. The Aggies have a below average defense. NWST was able to pass well to the outside on the boundary and exploit the run to a small degree. If NWST had a solid offensive line and a couple of good running backs then the score wouldn't have been that lopsided. The Aggies have a weak secondary. Clemson's running backs are nothing to be overlooked which will draw the Aggies in to load the box, and this will leave our WR's wide open on the boundary for quick screen passes. It will be a pick your own poison scenario. NWST played one dimensional whereas Clemson has a balanced attack.
Verdict: Expect a ton of offensive production even with vanilla play calling because of the athletic ability and raw talent that we have on the roster.
SIDE NOTE: During fall camp the offense dominated the defense in two of the three scrimmages. LET THAT SINK IN. The only time the defense did well against the offense was in the situational scrimmage. So, either our defense has eroded or our offense is just really that dang good. I'll go with our offense being that good.
Conclusion: Texas A&M is obviously in rebuild mode. Clemson has an ULTRA embarassment of riches on the roster at every position.
What I think will happen:
Kelly Bryant will enter the game and gain a comfortable lead of at least three scores in the first quarter. Then Trevor Lawrence will enter the fold and continue running the score up. Add in Chase Brice to bring about insult to injury. The Tigers should score no less than 40 points.
The Defense will get plenty of penetration at the line of scrimmage and put overwhelming pressure on the Aggie quarterback. This will cause the quarterback to make mistakes and cause a few turnovers. We may even get a defensive score. I'm predicting nothing less than two turnovers, and 5 sacks on the evening.
SCORE PREDICTION: BODY BAGS BY HALFTIME! The score will be CLEMSON 45 / AGGIES 17. GO TIGERS!

I'm glad you wrote all this, so I didn't have to. Pretty much spot on and their weaknesses are so obvious. TAM might score against our D, but it is going to be one heck of a hard day for TAM next week. And their pass coverage, or lack of it, is going to make our O look awesome (which might be a given anyway).
Good post.

Texas A&M will only score in garbage time against our 3rd string defense who is still learning. Keep in mind, we are going to be shifting some DEs who have added weight to the center of the defensive line this season to add depth that we will most certainly lose going into next season. So you'll see some guys who are new at DE by the end of third quarter rolling into the game. By then, it will be too late.

I completely agree. Their pass blocking looked very suspect. And unlike against this JV team, they will have to pass to compete with Clemson. I think it will be a long night for Jimbo next week.

I feel sure we can put a check mark in the W column against A&M, but, rest assured that Jimbo wasn't showing not one inking of what His team will be like when we play them. Jimbo Fisher is very familiar of what Dabo and Clemson are capable of doing on both sides of the LOS, and they will be a much better team at 7PM on 9-8-2018 than what anybody saw from the Aggies in their Miss matched competition/game against NW St. We saw about as much of what A&M was today as they will see of us on Saturday against Furman, and that will be nothing!!! The winner of Clemson and A&M will have to play a great game on 9-8-2018 to get the win!!!

They're running back group as a whole might not be great but Trayveon Williams is an extremely gifted running back. The depth behind him is what is lacking.

Agreed! Their rushing attack wasn’t bad, but what they do against Clemson will be a real indication of what Jimbo and team could be expected to accomplish later in the season.

Really....so if Hyatt goes down you wouldn't skip a beat moving true freshman Jackson into that LT spot? You better look again. Your 2nd team Oline has zero PT/experience.

Nice post and good analysis. My take is more anecdotal but I think it will be a little more challenging than this. Kyle Field is a great atmosphere and a very difficult place to play. The 12th Man will be fired up for us and I expect to see the Aggies best come out early. I think we could see a close score at halftime but also expect our depth to begin to wear them down and see us start to separate later in the second half.
I will be happy to be wrong and hope for an early blowout but when it is this early in the season and we have our first big test away from home, I anticipate facing some adversity that we will have to overcome.

Lane stadium holds like 65,000 people, Kyle Field holds over 100,000. It could be much worse.
I just don't want to see those kissing cadets again. That was very annoying.

I watched a little bit of the game and I was shocked how little NWSU looked on the D-line. One DT looked like an average Tiger LB to me. After crushing this weak team aTm will certainly be just a bit over confident. CU 38-10.

I hope you are right but I really don't know if we can glean all that much from a teams first game of the year. The most improvement a team will make typically happens between game 1 and game 2 of the season. Northwestern State has not had a winning record since 2008 and that kind of team does not typically elicit the attention to get ones best effort.
I think Clemson will win but also think it may be more of a fight than some on here think. Texas A&M has 3 extra days this week for preparation (total of 8 days) as to where Clemson will have 5 at most (one day lost to travel). I trust our process but A&M is gonna be pumped (fans and players) having the number two team coming to town and we are going to get a lot better effort out of A&M than what Northwestern State received...

I've said for a while that their O-line is in shambles

Really good observations. I was expecting their secondary to not be very disciplined because they're young, and it looks like that's what happened. Pretty sure they only have one DB that's decent, and he didn't play last year.
I completely agree with you on the score, except they might not score 17. We've got some road battles this year (at BC, at FSU) where I expect the game to be tight at the half and maybe even going into the fourth. Those are two REALLY good teams, especially BC. A&M is not a really good team. They have no X-factor (Dillon, Akers, Deebo) and are still learning a brand new pro system very different from what they've been doing. This one will be over before halftime. I expect the game flow will be similar to Louisville last year.
Tigers 41 Puppies 10
Lawrence plays the third quarter, Brice plays the fourth. Batson may make an appearance. Their points will all come late in the second half.

I live in College Station and have had a few conversations with aggies recently. One was at a local greasy/fastfood joint for a quick unhealthy bite... Old cashier/manager with his aggie ring on saw my Clemson cap and first thing out of mouth was "I ain't dumb and know the A&M o-line was bad last year, ain't gunna be fixed in an off-season and won't see a better d-line all season than on week 2".
On paper, I feel like we should dominate, but you never know. First actual competition and on the road in what will at least start out as a loud unfriendly environment.

Their OLine looked bad on the edges. Really bad. NWST was able to get their DE's through or around the corners and collapsed the edges of the pocket on almost every play.
AM's running game up the middle looked scary last night. Running at the edges was abysmal, but their interior OLine looked strong. Trayveon Williams looks like a serious threat, especially if he can get it up the middle. Their OLine seemed pretty good on the dive plays and middle run game. That worries me as we have seen holes in the particular area of our defense. Pitt and Syracuse exploited those weaknesses up-the-middle for 3 years straight. We lost 2/3 games and the 3rd was a high scoring shootout at Syracuse in 2015.
A&M put up 503 rushing yards last night. Thats the first time A&M posted more than 500 rushing yards in a game since 1990. They have a strong ground attack that we cant overlook.
Their QB seemed decent too, decent enough to recognize opportunities and exploit them. How well, I'm not sure. He only had 182 yards and 2 tds, but considering their ground game, he may not need to throw much. The jury is out on their QB Mond. He may be mediochre, or he may be a secret weapon. I dont think we saw enough of him last night to be able to confidently say stopping the A&M run game is enough.
This could be a really tough game. But, if we stop their run game and the QB turns out to be average, it could be over by the 2nd quarter.

Yes there were huge holes in the midline all night. I don't think they will be nearly as successful against us. Trayveon is a fast back but he's not nearly on the level of guys we have faced like dalvin cook.
We should be able to put tamu in more 3rd and longs and pressure the qb. Their first string qb was pretty good imo.
They didn't seem to have the talent or speed jimbo used to have @ FSU

No they did not, maybe that is why Trayveon looked so much better? Either way, letting that kid get loose is not a good idea.

I have a feeling that it's going to be really hard for TAMU to run on us. Jimbo always was able to bust a couple of long runs on us with FSU. That could be the case next week. LB's hopefully will have great gap discipline this year.

Good analysis but I'm not one to predict a blowout. A blowout may occur but more often than not, many posters in the past have predicted a blowout when we found ourselves in a tight game. We have the potential for a blowout win but we can be certain every one of our opponents will bring their best game. We are now the team with the bull's eye on our backs and every opponent will want to boast to their fans and the entire world, "we beat the best, we beat Clemson".
I've become more conservative in my football predictions as I have aged, probably due to the fact I've eaten so much crow that even the thought of it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I completely agree...blowout predictions over decent teams is the one thing I really dislike seeing on TigerNet. (Other than that, it’s pretty much the perfect website...??)
I love it when the blowout wins do happen (Miami!), but they were also predicted against Pitt and Syracuse the last two years...and each of the last 2-3 losses to USUC.
I know the whole “players don’t read TigerNet” argument, but if they do, they walk away thinking “this one’s going to be a cakewalk”...that can’t help.
At any rate, TAMU will be FAR better against us than in their warmup game...and like you said, everyone will want to knock us off this year.

I have to thank you, you provided a great deal of laughs and good natured chuckles in your "expert" analysis. We'll just leave it that either our offense is better than any you've ever faced in half a decade, or the Clemson D-line is a bit over rated. And except for a few busted assignments, our terrible defense pretty much dominated the Clemson "All-Star" offense. I'll always give credit to the victor though, the ball bounces funny and Clemson was the team that won this game. Can't wait to see your stadium next year!
