What is the worst officiating call in Clemson history?

Heard something similar on the radio this morning but for all of CFB.
Worst officiated game might be the Pitt game 2 years ago, but what was the worst call in Clemson history that resulted in a game loss.

The bad call that gave Maryland a game-winning TD on an incomplete pass and the 1985 ACC Championship, and subsequently got Danny banned to the coaches box by the conference the following season at Maryland for being picked up on TV cussing at the officials.

Multiple calls on that one. The reason

Danny was so mad was the same crew worked the previous week when we lost to UNC on a ridiculous pass down to the one yard line that the UNC WR caught the ball, held it for a half second, was hit by our DB, he dropped the ball, and our DB recovered. So, the call should have been either a completion and a fumble, or incomplete. The ref called a completed pass and forward progress stopped, first and goal at the one with less than a minute to go. UNC scored a TD to win 21-20. Same crew the next week against Maryland. Danny had enough.

To add to your description. The receiver for UNC was facing

the UNC QB, squared up. At the instant the ball hit him in the chest, he was nailed in the back by our Safety. The ball popped out immediately and the receiver was standing straight up! Incomplete or fumble with Clemson recovery were the only two options....or so we thought. Refs ruled the receiver was down immediately upon contact...

Receiver did not have possession. They called a TV timeout, but TV decided not to take it. Danny runs out on the field to explain to the ref why it was not a catch.

Just football? I think Pitt was horrendous for sure including MW7 being out of bounds while touching the ball but they still gave the possession to Pitt. But the 1985 BLOWN call on the field for Maryland to lead to a Clemson loss was horrendous!
If anything in Clemson sports the Duke vs Clemson basketball game when the refs put significantly too much time on the clock that led to Duke scoring the game winning basket has to be up there.

Yeah, the Duke basketball game was not only a blotch call like the Maryland game but rather a concentrated effort to bend time and space to hand a meh Duke team a win.

In the words of Kirk Herbstreit during the Pitt game "Thats now 21 unanswered points due to questionable calls".
Duane Heydt and his crew were alter suspended, likely for conflict of interest as Duane Heydt was founder and CEO of a company called "Tegra Analytics" whose biggest customer is the University of Pittsburg.

We have been victims of some bad officiating by ACC refs over the years. I was at the Pitt game two years, and that was bad enough.
The worst ever goes back a long time to Chapel Hill in 1965. UNC was up either 3 or 4 points, and the Tigers came to the LOS with first and goal at the heels' 1 yard line. A TD would win the game, and there were 25 seconds on the game clock, but we had no time outs left. ACC referee Lou Bello stood over the ball those 25 seconds and refused to let the Tigers run a play. The clock ran out with Bello still standing over the ball, and we lost the game to UNC.
That was a long time ago, but that was the worst act by a ref that I have ever known.

I agree, I've seen that trick at other games. Back in the 60's it happened to Marshall twice, on the road with a chance to beat a more connected school.

Interception turned catch vs BC - 2005/2007 maybe?

I remember a game vs BC where we intercepted a pass only to have the call reversed on replay due to "simultaneous possession". Can't remember the year, but was thinking it was one of the heartbreaking losses to BC toward the end of the Bowden era.

But a game winning catch by a tarheel that hit the ground and he caught it on the first bounce. And it wasn’t a close call. The receiver tried to catch the ball running up the sideline and he knocked it down and it bounced up and he caught it at waist height! I bet some old timers remember this. Probably in the 70’s. Impossible to miss that call... but they did!

the Valley with Woody Dantzler at QB and Julius Peppers was at UNC. Tommy Bowden spent the whole game complaining that Peppers(who was dominating the game) was lining up in the neutral zone on EVERY play(obvious when I saw my tape of the game when I got home, pretty obvious in the stands). No calls. UNC wins in an upset. Fastforward a week and UNC is playing Duke at Durham. Julius Peppers gets called three times in the first quarter for lining up in the neutral zone, five times altogether, is not a factor and Duke wins. That has po'ed me ever since.

For me personally it would be 1999 at nc state. 2 touchdowns after clear delay of games where our players stopped playing. We lose 35-31 and officials get suspended. Back to back pass interference calls on first round draft pick antuan Edwards at Virginia in 1998 walking them up the field for the game winning kick 20-18 would be a close second.

The worst call I have ever witnessed against a Clemson football team occurred in 1965 against UNC in Chapel Hill. Late in the 4th quarter, our wide out clearly caught a pass in the end zone, took 2 steps and ran out the side of the end zone. He was very much in bounds when he caught the ball. The refs ruled it out of bounds. That TD would have won the game for us. Following the game, Coach Howard sent the game film to the ACC offices in protest.
