My goodness oversigning is an ugly practice

It happens every single year. Some young athlete gets his dream offer only to have the rug pulled out from under him upon a phone call. Recently this happened to 4* DL Marques Ford, a Tennessee commit...
"Former Tennessee commitment Marques Ford is "definitely a little bit angry," according to his high school coach, after being told Wednesday there was no longer room for him in the Vols recruiting class.
Frank LaRosa, who coached the defensive end at East Bay High School near Tampa, Fla., said Ford received a call from Tennessee defensive line coach Steve Stripling on Wednesday — exactly two weeks before national signing day.
"It's an ugly business," LaRosa said. " … In the nasty business, they kept it sort of honest by at least saying that they had other commits and they were pulling his commitment."
http://www.tennessean.com/story/vols/2015/01/21/marques-ford-decommits-tennessee/22123845/
Yes coach, it is an ugly business indeed. Upon some further reading it is of no surprise to me that the SEC is the most common offender. A few other names popped up (Ohio State, Miami, UofL) but the number of SEC schools practicing this immoral tactic is simply astounding. Sure you want the very best on your roster but would one really argue that it is a fair practice? To offer a kid and then rescind it two weeks prior to NLI Day? Yet it has even occured hours prior to signing on the dotted line. The offender? You guessed it, Darth Visor. The story:
"Additionally, on the day before National Signing Day, South Carolina rescinded offers to two other recruits that had verbally committed to signing with the school. One of the recruits, Lorenzo Mauldin, had been committed to the school for months[36] but learned he would not receive a scholarship offer when South Carolina faxed a notice of the rescinded offer to his high school on the day before Signing Day.[37] Walter Banks, the coach of Jordan Montgomery, the other recruit whose scholarship offer was pulled the day before National Signing Day, told The Wall Street Journal, "I told [South Carolina coaches] this was foul. I didn't have a clue until 18 hours before signing day, and if they say anything else, they're lying." Banks also told The State that South Carolina coaches are "no longer welcome" at his high school (South Lake High School in Groveland, Florida) saying, "I cannot look a kid and their parent in the face and say you can trust what a University of South Carolina coach says."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oversigning
Well Spurrier, it's a good thing you had such a deep linebacker core. Gosh, I guess that Lorenzo Mauldin fellow never amounted to much... (107 tackles, 74 solo, 21 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 5 passes defended) So just how badly does the SEC use this tactic? Well, they've even coined a name for it: "The Houston Nutt rule."
Houston Nutt Rule- In May 2009, the SEC passed a rule restricting its football teams to accepting no more than 28 National Letters of Intent each year.[18] This move was widely viewed as a direct response to the University of Mississippi and its head coach, Houston Nutt, having promised 37 scholarships to new recruits for the 2009 season. Thus the rule is now commonly referred to as "The Houston Nutt Rule."
And with two weeks to go you're sure to see more scholarships rescinded. It is, IMO, a very ugly practice. Marquez Ford you have my deepest sympathies and I hope you find the right home. You won't be the only one posting on Twitter, "Well now what...."

So what do you say to the coaches of the 100+ kids that have flipped their commitment to another school and left the coaches scrambling to fill spots. Yes it is a dirty bussiness but don't be so naive to think it is only one-sided.

So in the past week one coach told a player what he felt about the word commitment and tnet is up in arms. In that same time period nearly a dozen athletes broke their word and not a peep.

I didn't do it back to make it even. Such a dumb argument. The balance of power is not equal. Why are you not capable of seeing that?

I say it is a coach above the age of 30 and a university that has thousands of students neither of which will be affected 1/100th as much as the kid who's life just changed because of your actions.

Seeing the kids be a bit indecisive is no surprise to me. Picking a college is a big decision. It's a stepping stone to life so it's one that you'd really wanna be certain of. However to see a middle aged guy rescind an offer seems rather ugly. Are you implying that you'd take the side of a coach on this one as opposed to the kid who had the rug pulled out from under him? I believe it personifies just how ugly and money hungry college athletics have become. But hey that's just my opinion.

this year. Their defense was pathetic this year, serve him right, karma's a b!tch.
Like I said in another thread, finding out 2 weeks in advance in better than finding out NSD or having his scholarship pulled after 2 years because he hasn't yet cracked the 2 deep. Moose is a good Coot, always taking up for the Slimeball HC, LOL

Fair enough, but the offerer has a higher responsibility
Jan 22, 2015, 2:46 PM
[ in reply to Re: My goodness oversigning is an ugly practice ] |

It's partially an age thing, where 17 year old kids are trusting adults to keep their words, while 17 year olds are notoriously indecisive. But mostly, because someone making an offer is usually in a position where they have more options and power than the person who might accept an offer, it's assumed that the offerer has more responsibility to hold to their word. Prospects like Ford that have a bunch of options aren't going to be left without a scholarship to play football, but what about lesser known or lesser talented players where they only had 1 or 2 options to begin with? Or what about guys who stop entertaining offers and stop visiting other schools because they believe they've made a mutual commitment with a school? Meanwhile, the school can continue making offers to other recruits. The school also probably isn't going to be hurt drastically by losing one recruit, while the recruit's fortunes are drastically changed when the school's commitment is rescinded.

should be honest and honor their commitment. Having said that, I think it's one thing for a 17 or 18 year-old kid to have an honest change of heart regarding perhaps the most important decision of his young life, and quite another for a wise, experienced coach to break his word out of convenience. I think that overall, the effect is much greater on the kid than the coach, and the coach should be held to a much higher standard in most of these cases.

Unfortunately nothing can be done to insure that the individuals scholarship be honored. But these coaches don't care. I just hope it is used against them next year on the recruiting trail.

JRMOOSE68, you have the TD post of the day!!! Nobody likes it when a kid flips on his commitment, but that is one of a million reasons we still label them as kids!!!

You mention are undecided until the last Minute. They are open about it.
In this case you had a non wavering commit from the kid and school for a long time.

Lorenzo Mauldin would be 3rd string on the Coots SEC defense at best.

You mentioned Lorenzo Mauldin. Here's an update in this kid who USuck "let go." This is a really great story. This kid looks like he is going to carve a spot for himself on an NFL roster through a ton of adversity.

Is this karma?

*4 LB Anthony McKee chooses Pitt over Tennessee and other schools. He is rated by ESPN as the #25 LB and has a 80 grade. McKee decided on Pitt over UT, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, and Michigan State. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/187849/anthony-mckee
Perhaps I'm studying this a tad to much but I think it's kinda ironic that they tell one kid to take a hike and another target commits to an ACC school. Pitt nonetheless. As mentioned, I am appalled by over signing and rescinding offers. I'd like to see a trend on signing day where several UT commits flip to other schools. Perhaps then they'd see what it's like when the shoe is on the other foot!

How long , one wonders , before the kids that are being recruited under the " SEC " brand begin to recognize that they are being rustled like cattle by these bandito coaches. How many lives have to be put on hold before this awful practice is outlawed ?

Not sure why you cannot sign when you commit
Jan 23, 2015, 8:43 AM
|
|
That would end all of this. Unless there are provisions made in advance that would nullify the contract (NCAA violations, head coach leaving, etc or if the athlete has academic problems or gets into trouble)
The early signing period would also help, but I think we could go a step further and sign when they commit. That would also keep all the vultures away once a kid signed. Like Cain or McCloud still getting pestered by media after they have supposedly shut down recruiting.
