We used to catch a small junk fish on Lake Murray when I was a kid that looked sorta like that. Skinny, wide vertical stripes and red fins (if I remember correctly).
I've heard them called :warmouths, suckers, and Eisenhower's.
Grandaddy said they were called Eisenhowers because Dwight D. had them put in the lake for some reason...
Keep in mind those names are slang and the Adidas family may have been the only ones to use those names.

You're right.
What I am talking about is a Yellow Perch.
We incorrectly called them Warmouths. I google Eisenhowers and when I saw the yellow perch, I knew that was what it was.

When we'd go feeshin'.
Didn't like them. Considered them trash fish.
But perch can be good eatin'.
Grandiddy could also tell by how the cows were layin' on the way to the pond whether the fish'd bite or not. He was usually right.

Eisenhowers are definitely considered trash fish down here. We'd cut them up for catfishing bait, or just throw them up on the shore.
White perch is good eatin' fish.
I haven't fished much on Murray since I was a kid, other than bass fishing. I haven't seen a Eisenhower and maybe only a few white perch in the past 15 years.
Bluegill are a dime a dozen, though.
