'It will take a year, maybe two, to develop a vaccine.'

"U.S. gives AstraZeneca $1.2 billion to fund Oxford University coronavirus vaccine, securing 300 million doses for country from October

British drugmaker AstraZeneca AZN, 1.66% has received more than $1 billion in U.S. funding to accelerate the development of Oxford University’s coronavirus vaccine candidate.

The agreement would make 300 million doses of the vaccine available in the U.S., with the first doses delivered in October, the U.S. Health Department said on Thursday. The agreement between AstraZeneca and the U.S. Biomedical Research and Development Authority also includes a phase 3 clinical trial in the U.S. this summer with 30,000 volunteers.

The U.S. has also supported vaccine efforts by Moderna MRNA, -6.81%, France’s Sanofi SAN, -0.23% and Johnson & Johnson JNJ, 0.32%, as part of the Trump administration’s “Operation Warp Speed”.

AstraZeneca said it has now secured orders for 400 million doses and has the manufacturing capacity for one billion doses — the first of which will be delivered in September if the Oxford vaccine proves successful..."

Yes it will and since we will have no real data on effectiveness and side effects on these being developed it is all a carp shoot in truth. Question really boils down to whether you want to be a lab rat. Data takes time and certainly side effect do too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the purpose of a Phase III study.

May 21, 2020, 10:39 AM

The big question is how exactly they're going to run a Phase III study with 30k subjects and get the vaccine approved in two months. That would be unprecedented.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep

May 21, 2020, 11:29 AM

Everything I read from the 'experts' said expect a vaccine at the end of 2021 at the earliest.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's impossible to know the side effects totally in 2 months

May 21, 2020, 11:53 AM

Then again, we may already know the side effects of covid, and have determined they're no less severe than potential vaccine side effects.

Best advice may be to do it like new technology. Let the new thing come out, wait for thousands of people to buy it and find all the flaws, wait for the mfg to fix the flaws, then buy version 2.0.

Yeah, I'm big into tech upgrades. I learned a long time back you don't wanna be on the cutting edge; you want the generation right behind the bleeding edge.

It's so much easier to let the early adopters crash-test stuff for you. That way you get much of the New Hotness...and very few of the teething problems.

I am not eager to be Gen 1 of the vaccine testers unless my life absolutely depends on it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And the counter to that is you don't want to buy version

May 21, 2020, 1:33 PM

13.5 either. Reason is that once they get a good product up and running, they immediately figure out ways to cut corners and make it cheaper to increase profits, while also decreasing the quality and longevity of the product so you buy replacements more often. Eventually it becomes a cheep piece of junk.

It seems pretty obvious that our bureaucrats and leaders...

May 21, 2020, 1:06 PM [ in reply to That's the purpose of a Phase III study. ]

will tell us exactly what satisfies their next passion. The truth be dammmed. It is likely they are claiming this will become available in Oct knowing that the probability that happens is low to give the public confidence, hope and something/anything to look forward to.

I could see that being justified if they only missed the release date by a couple weeks or so. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it's probable.

There's a looooot of money riding on this

May 21, 2020, 11:49 AM [ in reply to Re: 'It will take a year, maybe two, to develop a vaccine.' ]

Maybe too much.

But they're pulling out all stops here and tossing everything against the wall to see what sticks. There may even be several candidates. Or none.

One benefit is the virus is literally everywhere. We can easily get the results of human challenge trials without having to make it really a "challenge". So we can proceed in the normal progression, but with far more speed.

the vaccine are on standby. Perhaps some prep work will shorten the wait for us. There's nothing wrong with preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

So basically...Trump just threw another $1.2 billion at Big Pharma. Awesome.

If it gets us a vaccine, sure, great...but is there a timeline here, or will they refund that amount if they end up not being able to deliver an effective vaccine within a certain timeframe?

Nevermind that, I already know the answer.

If they manage to deliver 400 million doses of a viable

May 21, 2020, 11:56 AM

vaccine in under six months, a billion dollars seems like a bargain.

It absolutely would be.

The question is, will they? Or are they just going to show empty pockets and hey, thanks for the cool billion, Uncle Sam?

The current administration is not real big on accountability...whereas they seem real big on mega-corp socialism.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If not, they won't touch side nor bottom.

Big pharma does very little virology research. Hopefully

May 21, 2020, 12:48 PM [ in reply to Re: 'It will take a year, maybe two, to develop a vaccine.' ]

they're using that $ to work with the smaller labs that are the experts in the stuff to do the discovery phase work. Big pharma is excellent, however, at running trials, scaling up production, and squeezing every last dollar out of consumers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I haven't read the contract(s).

I think the drug manufacturers have us by the shorthair. I wouldn't expect altruistic behavior out of anyone in business.

May 21, 2020, 2:18 PM [ in reply to Re: 'It will take a year, maybe two, to develop a vaccine.' ]

would be the "Trump didn't prepare" song and dance to listen to on cnn. Not saying you would do that. Am saying that in the narrative there is no winning. Choosing either option in most decisions will bring equal criticism, from the same exact people.

All one can do is do the best one can, and let 'em talk. If a news industry set out to lose its standing, it could not have designed a better strategy.

The polio never had double blind studies and I was forced to take the vaccine as a child. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying I never got polio.

Still, if the vaccine works, those who do not want to take the vaccine can only infect others who don't want to take the vaccine. Therefor, this entire exercise is a waste of time, imo.

Why Dershowitz speculated on this is beyond me.
