Is it OK to leave a game early just because it's a blowout?

Jul 16, 2012, 12:38 PM

In light of a thread below, I am interested to know where people fall on this topic. Taking out any extenuating circumstances, is it OK for fans to leave early if there team is being blown out (i.e. leaving just because it's a blowout)?

I have my own opinion on this, as noted in the thread below. This is not intended to be for flaming or calling anyone out. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to do what they want. I am just curious as to what the basic philosophy of the masses is?

The section we sat in had a lot of locals and fans who were there just for the game not cheering for either team--and as such, there weren't a lot of WVU fans close by, but I heard some stories.

Same here, I think the Orange Bowl was pretty unique though

Jul 25, 2012, 3:00 PM [ in reply to Depends... ]

Seemed like the players gave up to me. I mean it was like they weren't even trying. Maybe I was being to hard on them, I don't know, but it didn't feel like max effort was given. It was like our defense didn't even want to be there. Epic mental collapse. It was so off-the-charts ridiculous that we were at least having fun up there in the stands. You couldn't help but make light of it. Even still, once there was about 12 minutes left in the 4th and facing a three hour drive north, we went ahead and got a move on. Don't regret the decision one bit. That was one miserable game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I understand it, at least

Jul 16, 2012, 12:40 PM

I'm not sure what I'd do. Depends on what's happening and how the team looks. The OB? I might leave in the 4th, yeah, but if it really is a blowout, you could argue the team's will left before that.

When we started punting instead of going for it on 4th down @NCST last year I left. I think there was around 3-4 minutes left at that point. I figure if the coaches have thrown in the towel, so will I.

I'm OK with leaving early at that point. It's generally not something I do, but I don't have a problem with others doing it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In my opinion

Jul 16, 2012, 12:44 PM

in a win, it's ok. You'd probably be watching the walk-ons and an extremely limited playbook in the 4th quarter anyway.

In a loss, you stay and support the team to the final tick of the clock. I stood proud in my orange in the middle of the WVU section at the Orange Bowl for the entire game, just like I did for the Alabama debacle in the Georgia Dome. If you leave before the end of a game when your team is losing, I hope you have a much better excuse than that we're getting our butts whipped.

then I think you support the whole team and not just the starters.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not just that it's the backups

Jul 16, 2012, 1:08 PM

it's that it's the backups with their foot off the gas, so we're seeing backups running extremely vanilla, ultra-conservative plays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is the coaches that take their foot off the gas and make

Jul 16, 2012, 1:22 PM

the players run the vanilla plays. But, the players themselves are working just as hard. For the back-ups, that is their chance to play, and they want to score touchdowns as if it is zip zip. They are giving it their all, its just the coaches a limiting their punches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm the opposite

Jul 16, 2012, 1:05 PM [ in reply to In my opinion ]

I've never left a game early that we won, and I think I only left 1 early when we lost. can't remember which game it was. and by early i mean like the other team only has to kneel and we can't stop the clock enough to have a shot.

never left a game before we are guaranteed to lose.

For me it depends on who we are playing. If it is PC then I dont really care about seeing us beat the socks off of them. If it is USC, UNC, GT, or some other bigger opponent that I dont like I will stay until the last second.

I love Clemson football; I've been a loyal fan for many years, and if the good Lord is willing, I will be for many more.

Having said that, I do not feel the need to prove to anybody else how good of a fan I am. I've left a lot of games early, for various reasons. I don't have to stand the entire game or maintain some kind of streak or sit in the rain or anything else that somebody else thinks proves their fan greatness. Eff 'em, I know what Clemson football means to me.

i don't have kids and no other extenuating circumstances that might require I leave a game at a specific time.

I am also lucky enough to have a wife that gets fired up for Gamecock football and refuses to leave a game early.

That said, I don't know all the circumstances surrounding the situation when i see people packing up and leaving early. Like anyone else, I assume during a blowout that it's just the fair weather nature kicking in. But who really knows what else they have going on.

At that point all I can do is chide them for not making football the single most important thing in their lives. Boneheads.

I have never left early

Jul 16, 2012, 12:54 PM

Just me but I never leave early don't care what the score, the weather, etc is. I stayed to the end of the OB and NCSU last year and have no regrets in doing so. My decision is do I go to the game or not (and I went to 12 last season), if I go I stay until the final horn sounds.

That said, I understand that other people make different decision or have other priorities.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In my youth, I'd have said "Never!"

Jul 16, 2012, 1:00 PM

And for me, it's still true. I'm there for the team, and even on the rare occasion that we clearly aren't going to triumph, I will not turn away.

That said, I would rather have folks turn their backs and walk away instead of staying in some form of psychic self-mutilation, or just so they can denigrate the team.

My belief is that there is a sense of union that comes from riding through the rough patches together that make the inevitable triumph of Clemson that much sweeter. Folks who wish to hop on and off the bandwagon are certainly welcome to do so, but they'll never be able to share that connection to the team.

Re: Is it OK to leave a game early just because it's a blowout?

Jul 16, 2012, 1:02 PM

Mapman ~ I appreciate your interest in such a question. I have wondered the same thing based on posts I have read on here in the past. I stayed until about 4 minutes to go in the OB ( I had enough of the WV fans in my section to the point I had told my son I was about to go to jail I thought). Of course it was over before I got to the gate I was exiting. With this being said, my biggest problem with some of our fans is just what you have brought up from the earlier thread. I read it as well. I live in the USA. We are for the most part a free society, and are free to come and go as we feel, game or not. However, and understand I normally will stay regardless of outcome, but myself or any other TIGER or heck even our hated enemy the coots have every right to arrive and leave a game at whatever time they desire. It does not make someone a bigger or smaller fan for staying the whole time or not!! I REPEAT YOUR FANDOM IS NOT DETERMINED BY YOUR ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIME FOR A GAME!! So, for the fans that think that, hope you never have a situation arise where you lose fan points for having to leave early. I do tend to agree with one poster on this thread.... I will stay for a blow out over a rout just to show support for the team!! Just my 2 cents!!! Go TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 hr. prior to kickoff. Whether its on the road or in DV; I feel that I have too much invested (emotionally and financially) to leave early. I mean we wait the majority of the year for these few moments on the weekends in the Fall to live out our fantasies, be with our friends, and follow the team that we all love. I stayed to the end in the freezing cold against Baylor, the Jeff Grantz day in DV, the longest game in Clemson history (or so it seemed) against Syracuse, the pouring rain of TCU, the seering heat of the Ga. Tech games, and the OB. H*ll no, I'm not leaving. I've got too much invested, and too few times to experience it. My .02.

it's not the end of the world for fans to leave early. it always happens. but it shouldn't matter if we're winning or losing, if the game is close or not. a truly loyal fan stays to support the team in good times and bad. i stayed for the entire orange bowl and was still proud to be a tiger regardless of the embarassment we had just suffered. sure, the average fan will leave early. but i was expecting more of tigernet. one way clemson distinguishes ourselves is having one of the best fanbases in the country. that includes staying until the clock reads 00:00.

I despise leaving early for blowouts, but I've done it

Jul 16, 2012, 2:06 PM

It's rare, but I'll leave if we're getting beat particularly bad and the coaches and team have just plain given up. The weather sometimes influences the decision too. I can only think of a one game I've left early out of disgust--Virginia Tech when they blanked us at home way back in 2000 or so. But aside from the terrible game I was so hot at I literally thought I was going to have a heat stroke. By contrast, when Georgia blew us out even worse a few years later, I stayed till the bitter end even though Death Valley was like a broiler oven. I was in or near the lower deck student section and as far as I can remember, I was the only person remaining for 20 rows up or down and 1-2 sections across.

I stayed at the most recent USC game in death valley even though I was completely surrounded by Gamecocks. That was difficult, but I refused to budge for those sons of b!tches.

These days I leave games early more often than I want to, but when I do it's because I have small children with me who simply don't have the tolerance to stay all 4 quarters.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes ..... why sit there and watch your team get smoked??

Yeah, its OK if your team is getting blown out or if your team is blowing someone out. Also, OK if its a tight game either way. You're a grown man. You're not required to be there. Do what you want.

I would rather beat 3/4 of the traffic out of the stadium. It's my preference. Occasionally I'll stay for the Alma mater and post game festivities, but generally, it's not worth the hassle to me. I love football, but I'm there for the atmosphere, not the game. I can see the game on TV, with better views, more info, and a stat tracker. I go to games for the camaraderie and the fun.
