It's this simple IMO. It used to be we were intimidated by others. But now, we intimidate others - aren't afraid of anyone anymore. Doesn't mean we should be foolish enough to take anyone for granted - that would be a big mistake. But we now have players (and coaches) who aren't in awe of the other teams like in the past.
Our guys know they can go at it with anybody now - they don't just hope they can. At Carolina, for example, those guys are still at the "pretend" level. They pretend to have swagger. They pretend to be competitive when they and their fans know it's not for real.
We saw intimidation in the 80s with our teams - they were the same way. They knew they could go toe to toe with anybody out there.
And it used to be we'd have an occasional big-time player. Now, they're all over the team and that's what is expected.
Programs like Alabama have the bar set high - that's why they've been winners because their players know what's expected of them. It's that way at Clemson now.
At Carolina, there are no real expectations of anyone. Average or worse is obviously allowed.
