What the top 10 should look like...

Nov 12, 2019, 9:53 AM

Current Strength of Record (top 15) ranking from ESPN:

1. LSU
2. Ohio State
3. Baylor
4. Minnesota
5. Clemson
6. Penn State
7. Auburn
8. Oregon
9. Florida
10. Alabama
11. Georgia
12. Utah
13. Cincinatti
14. Michigan
15. Oklahoma

So please tell me why Alabama should be ranked #5, when they have the 4th best SOR in their own conference. Eye test is subjective crap.

What the CFP ranking should actually be tonight:
1. LSU
2. Ohio State
3. Clemson
4. Baylor
5. Minnesota
6. Oregon
7. Georgia
8. Utah
9. Oklahoma
10. Alabama

All of the top 9 teams control their own fate within their conference. The top 5 have all not lost a game. Alabama is the best team that has lost a game but they DO NOT CONTROL their own fate, so they are at 10.

I really like everything you put together here.

Just to generate conversation, I would have Minnesota over Baylor because their "good win" is better than Baylor's best win.

Both have had close games with average/below average teams. The only real separator is that Minn beat a top 5 team last week while Baylor struggled to win close games against unranked teams in the last couple of weeks.

Thank you.

I just think Baylor is better than Minnesota. They'll both have chances to prove it, so 4 vs 5 doesn't really matter at this point.

They both have opportunities left to prove their worth, so their current ranking is pretty insignificant.

Can you link us to the SOR directly? I can never find it.

Happy to see Minnesota at 4 with that metric. That makes it

seem valid. The FPI needs some tuning imo. SOR should have much more weight.

but whether you like it or not, subjectivity is a factor in

determining the top 4 in the current system. Its impossible to pick just 4 teams without eye test subjectivity. Some years it might be evident but with a top 25 teams to pick from you're going to have some log jams. The best way to combat this is assemble a diverse group of people from all conferences and all walks of life and come to a consensus based on facts, merit, and intangibles.IF you had 5 undefeated teams then you gotta pick based off of alot of factors.

Even Strength of schedule is not purely factual. How many times do we complain that the SEC having 4/5 teams in the Top 10 at the beginning of every year. WE say that its biased and they give preferentila treatment to SEC teams b/c they're perceived as such an elite conference with the more speed and better players. Well those polls help compile those Strength of Schedule numbers.

So in the end there will have to be a subjective element in order to get those 4 teams. The only way this gets rectified (somewhat) is to expand the playoff. But even then you'll have those who argue about the #8 team. But the pot is more complete and you'll have more teams that are worthy vying for the championship.

I think the biggest problem is when people ignore actual

results of games in favor of the "eye-test." That happens with teams like UGA and Bama. They already lost and Minnesota hasn't, but UGA and Bama should still be ahead because of.... not the games.... but... the eye test? That's too close to random.
