Seems like having to hold the fermentation at a cold temperature would cost more?
I know most early micros went with ale because brewing at room temp is cheaper both in equipment and energy costs.
I guess if you already have lagering equipment you just ramp up production on that line
If you don’t you’re screwed

Also - the raw ingredients of ales and most IPA should be higher than that of lager.
