Gamecocks are basically saying breaking Howard's Rock is

"payback" for the vandalism that happened to the cockabooses a few months back.
...They did that to themselves. What Clemson fan in their right mind would add a "4" to that?

Whoever did it is an idiot

Could be a Clemson fan, could be a setup. But I'm guessing its an idiot Tiger fan (and there are some of those as much as we wish there weren't). It's vandalism and reeks of taking this crap way too seriously.
And whoever broke the rock is similarly an idiot (though the action was a worse action since it is effectively a permanent action).
In the end some folks just take all of this way too seriously. Damage to real property is not, and should not, be part of the rivalry.

Could have been done by the same person

That spray painting could have been the made up excuse to go for the Rock. There is no way a Clemson fan would spray paint a tiger paw like that, much less add "4" to it.

Paint washes off and grass can be cut

Our Rock will never return to the way it is and i don't want it to. I want the player to see it and feel that rage build up every home game and punish whomever is in front of them.

not quite the same level, plus you can paint over that

Painting on somebody's field or on tagging something isn't quite the same as breaking/ taking something that is irreplaceable.

I thought painting on the field was funny

because it didn't cause any actual monetary damage (you can just wait on the grass to grow then cut it)
The cockaboose thing was a bit too far because it takes man-hours and paint thinner to fix, but it was nowhere near the level of breaking the rock.

Plus, painting on a caboose isn't the same as breaking & entering and destroying forever a statue..even though both acts are not within good sportsmanship.

to understand.
Comparing this to something that can be easily removed or cleaned-up just further demonstrates the functional stupidity and clueless ignorance of the average Jock Strap.
