In addition to sideline to sideline, it gives DW a basic pass, WR a basic block and another WR a basic catch, OL basic short term protection to get a feel for front 4...
Bama will be disciplined on play one: Do not throw over the middle on first play as they will be home. Do not run up middle or zone read b/c they will be disciplined and it will be little to no gain. Quick pass gives a shot for 2-8 yards.

I see your point....but I think if they are being disciplined is just as likely we lose yards on a sideline / screen pass.
I want to threaten them.....attack... I want to go at them....not sit back and hope they miss.
But granted.....if my aggression leads to an int off the bat then..... OOOOPS!

we've run jumbo maybe a half-dozen times this season. Maybe the coaches just don't think we're very good at it. But I'd love to see us doing something off beat and unexpected. Maybe even run a package out of the wishbone at some point.

That's kinda what I'm seeing....except to fake the Dw4 run and pass over middle..... think the defense will be keying early on the QB run and we like to run out of that look.

little bit and there will be an emphasis on at least getting a first down or two to start the game. I don't think the coaches want to get overly aggressive on the first few plays and end up with a 3 and out.
Also, a hand off to Gallman on the first play of the game is likely to leave you at 2nd and 9 so I'm not sure that's the play either. We will look to get the running game going for sure and Gallman will get his touches even if he's averaging 2-3 ypg, but i don't know if we start the game by just handing it off to him.
Watson run or a fairly safe pass seem pretty likely to me. It could be something to Leggett or a screen out to Scott. Bama is probably going to start the game with their safeties deep to protect against the deep balls to Williams and Cain. They will do that until we force them up.

methinks Saban has seen a few TE throws from us

and has worked his defense overtime on it.
I also think Bama will be coming after us as hard as they can early,
so I'd throw some sort of misdirection at them -
just not slow developing or behind the LOS.
Go basic, roll out to move the pocket, throw a stick or sit-down curl.
Give them the same look the next play the other side.
Then introduce them to Deon Cain on a streak.
Do it twice if the first time doesn't work.
Push them long all game - make them play the whole field.
Bama's faster than last year, but they aren't as fast as Deon or Ray Ray...

Not behind LOS and not Deep. Something that gets an open receiver the ball and puts the D off balance. They will stuff a run on first play then start out one step ahead. A safe pass puts us a step ahead in the chess match.

Judge,
That's my concern. Actually I think the first play well tell us a lot. If we run WG up the middle it will seem more like trying to play it safe, little risk, and honestly it would feel like conceding an early 3 and out.
However, if we come out with misdirection.... fake the run....hit a pass beyond 5 yards down field....I believe it means we game planned to take it to them and put them on their heels from the word GO!
