I think the key factor is money.

At the start of the conversation D-Rad spent a great deal of time talking about the nature of Coach Brownell's contract and what Clemson would have to pay out to Coach Brownell should they fire him and the terms of the buy out. He also talked about wanting to be a good steward of the financial resources that are at Clemson's disposal. I find that to be the key issue here and I think I follow what might be his thinking here.

Over the past few years, Clemson has been focused heavily on facility improvements. Baseball, football, now basketball have been focused on. From Dabo's comments regarding soccer back at the Football Operations building opening I'd say they are looking at soccer which is just a guess and D-Rad said they were going to be looking at softball which is a certainty.

That's a lot of money and my guess is that D-Rad sees a situation where, yes, they have not met expectations regarding post-season but they are winning games and off court the program is successful in terms of graduation rates and other positives. There's really no reason to get into a situation that not only involves firing a coach and his staff and dealing with buyouts but also hiring new coaches and dealing with new contracts. I think he would rather focus on the long range goals of the athletic department and save the decision to fire anyone until it's absolutely certain there's no other option available.

I understand D-Rad says it's not about money but I have to disagree with him. He spent a lot of time discussing the issues with Brownell's contract and I think you have to factor in buyouts for fired coaches plus hiring coaches plus all the money being spent on facilities. Thats a lot of money.
