Every sports website I go to has a link to Dabo's

"we'd probably win 5"

Let me preface this by saying I am a Dabo fan.

However, I hope he realizes how stupid that statement is. The Tigers just suffered a historic loss at home nonetheless at the hands of FSU, and he has that to say?

It makes him look delusional and it makes Clemson look bad as well.

kinda comes off as playing off the loss as not

that big a deal. Which is what Philpot was trying to do yesterday with his "a win over maryland will erase a lot of the FSU game"

It's because the original article was put out by the AP. Most of the major news sites feed off the AP and most of the smaller sites feed off the major news sites so...there you go.

Yeah the coots will have a field day with this.

Although they lost to Rocky Top, so they can't really say that much.

You'd prefer he throw team and coaches under the bus

and leave it at that. No making stupid statements and no throwing anyone under the bus.

It's simple and it bothers me that he went out of his way to say this nonsense.

Words mean a lot less than outcome and performance

Posted: Oct 23, 2013 1:13 PM

I see that his words get under your skin. For me, I expect coaches to make nearly meaningless or overly optimistic statements in public. I'd rather he make statements people see as "silly" or "egotistical" or whatever, as long as it helps build the team's confidence. Who knows, maybe if he just said he got beat and left it at that some players might feel a little dissed.

And as far as I recall, Dabo did say the team didn't play the way they are capable. He just didn't put it in the words so many of us have been using in the forums (me included)!!!

The one part of your response that irks me is....

"Who knows, maybe if he just said he got beat and left it at that some players might feel a little dissed."

After this game the players ought to be a little butthurt/dissed.

Take responsibility, keep your mouth shut, and go to work. That's what leaders do.

He should speak to the players in the locker room, not on the national media.

I have little doubt his words in practice are different

from his words in public.

Can you point to any player you think or see isn't

Posted: Oct 23, 2013 1:26 PM

feeling butthurt/dissed as you say?

We just disagree about Dabo. I was a lot more irritated when he stepped in front of a microphone year 1 and 2. Back when he used to jump all over the sidelines like a kid. He has 'matured' a little and most of his public statements don't strike me as that outrageous or out of line. A little egotistical? Maybe. Just not the same noise that we used to hear. In two years, he might sound even MORE composed and professional. It's not like he's Saban's age. Heck, he's even a wee bit younger than Jimbo Fisher. He'll grow. At least that's my opinion....

you made the point that maybe if he says we just got beat

[1]
Posted: Oct 23, 2013 1:35 PM

it'll hurt the players feelings....

My response to that is that after the way they played Saturday night they deserve to have their feelings hurt.

My point is this: criticizing in public versus one-on-one

Posted: Oct 23, 2013 2:10 PM

is the difference. We can't know for sure, but I have to think the players that underperformed consistently (most??) are getting an "adjustment" from ALL the coaches this week. In private. In practice.

It just looks to me that it is Dabo's style to make over-positive statements for the benefit of his team (in his eyes) and not for himself or the fans. It's possible that if he just let it go with a negative statement, he might lose a little of whatever he is trying to get out of the team and each player. Respect. Dedication. Pick your poster-word.

You may disagree but I doubt any player is feeling 'coddled' this week. Could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Wow, you really are a Dabo fan.***

Make, but what SHOULD he say as coach of the team?

"If we played them 10 times, this would probably be the closest game of the 10. However bad we looked on Saturday, we are even worse. And however good they looked, they are even better. Can we go ahead and forfeit the game in Tally next season?"

We both know that saying nothing is not an option. As coach, what would YOU say?

Re: Because so many coaches just refuse to talk to the media

[2]

My dear fellow Clemson fan, what I mean to say is NOT that Dabo should refuse to talk to the media. What I mean to say is that Dabo SHOULD talk to the media, and be optimistic, and defend his players, and point out the positive. That's fine and great. Here is the confusing part for a lot of people (for whatever reason)...

Dabo should say a little less. In this case, to be more specific, Dabo should have not said the idiot comment we are referring to. So, before you asked "what else should he have said".... I pray that you will understand what I mean when I say...nothing. That doesn't mean don't give a press conference, it means, leave out the stupid comments. I refuse to believe that any T-Netter can't understand that.

2020 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg

Maybe he can be a patronizing, self important blowhard

Posted: Oct 23, 2013 8:28 PM

See what I did there?

I am a Clemson fan and a Clemson alumnus, and I resent your arrogant tone. Maybe Dabo wishes he could have that comment back. Clearly you do, and so do I.

But he is a grown man capable of making his own decisions...and press statements...and accepting their consequences.

2020 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg

I don't think my patronizing tone is any worse than your

[1]
Posted: Oct 23, 2013 8:52 PM

earlier hyperbole and false dichotomy. Two different shades of annoying.

And I pretty much agree with everything you said excluding the blowhard part and the insinuation that the consequences of Dabo's words are his alone. We all pay, albeit in minor fashion, when Clemson's reputation is damaged.

Him accepting consequences A. probably won't happen because he never backs off of his statements and B. doesn't erase him associating dumb statements with Clemson football.

And I wasn't directing all of that sarcasm at you. It was directed at the mass of people who keep going back to that #### false dichotomy.

2020 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg

So you are saying

[3]
Posted: Oct 23, 2013 3:30 PM

We got our butts kicked by a very good football team. I think that we are a very good football team too but we certainly didn't show it. Give credit to FSU for taking advantage of our poor play and putting us away early. We will work on our mistakes and get ready for Maryland.

That sounds about right. Nobody thrown under the bus,

[1]

there is a happy medium. I love how you assume he has to replace this statement with something overly negative. He doesn't.

You don't have to tear the team or coaches down in the media.

But you also don't belittle a team that just let loose a historic beatdown on you. It makes you look like an idiot.

Norther Tiger

I like your train of thought. I thought Dabo was a joke 3 years ago with his antics, lack of Xs and Os, and jumping up and down on the sidelines (Many of you liked that but I am not a bad guy for thinking it was Busch League)

However, he has matured and come into his own. I could do without the clichés and the ridiculous statement about 5 out of 10 but he is really turning into what seems to be a good CEO. He is not a play caller, he is not a defensive or offensive genius. He is a great recruiter and knows he can get good players and turn them over to good Coordinators. That sounds like someone who knows his limitations and capabilities and that is what makes a good leader.

I thought he took a step back to his old ways with the ridiculous statement when he could simply say hey, they beat us and we will go back to work hard and get better and get them next time

Exactly. I guess most would rather him say man we got our a$$es handed to us and I'm sure glad we don't have to play them again! Because that would make our players feel really confident moving on to finish out the rest of the season.

He didnt have to make the statement he made.
