Checking in on the day after signing day.

Dec 19, 2019, 12:26 AM

Congrats. From an outsider's perspective, I would say that Clemson not only pulled off the #1 signing day of the year, but as good as any single signing day in several years.

For those of you asking about FSU, I think it is safe to say we exceeded expectations. Most of us are excited about Norvell, but also cautious. We got burned by Taggart and we don't want to jump up with great excitement so quick this time.

But, here are two big differences between now and when Taggart was hired.

1. Coaching staff. Norvell is hiring guys who have worked with him in the past. Taggart hired guys he had no prior coaching relationship with. The coaching staff was dysfunctional form day one. Listening to the post signing day presser Norvell and the two coordinators sounded like Dabo and Brant and Tony. All on the same page, speaking the same language and very quick to give the other two guys the credit. He hired another coach last night - OL from TCU. They have also coached together.

2. Recruiting. He put together a top 20 class. Due in large part to keeping Odell and Dugans, but also due to the work of him and the two coordinators hitting the ground running. One quick example. Taggart recruited zero quarterbacks in two years. Norvell recruited two in 10 days. And, neither was on FSU's radar until he came. Got a kid from Valdosta High as his first commitment. Then managed to flip a 4 star from Arizona who was committed to Louisville.

Oh, one more thing. He has something in common with Dabo. He recruited a punter with no high school football experience.
