Seen more spam, pop-ups, sliders, fake-clickers and otherwise detritus making the website unreadable. It was so bad I changed back to my laptop that remembered my password.

I think you just answered your own question. Pain has been proven to be a far greater motivator than pleasure. So if you were running a pay website that also allowed people to contribute for free how would you motivate people to quit freeloading and join? Offer all kinds of incentives or make the free experience miserable?

Personally I think it is wrong to allow an individual to post on a website and call other posters vulgar names and hide their feelings behind a bogus user name.
