Watching the ACCCG game replay...

And considering the plays in the natty that lost us the game - special teams coach needs to be on the hot seat this year. If I see one more onside kick snafu, I'm going to vomit.

Yes twice in a row was ridiculous. We are lucky they didn't get it back.

Lot of confusion and busts in the secondary and no pressure

on the quarterback on lots of plays late. We were worn down late in games. Hope we play smarter in the secondary and have more depth (and Venables plays them) this year.

ACCCG game replay...and Special Teams

The Special Teams coach is not on the hotseat because there is NO SPECIAL TEAMS COACH. Danny Pearman proved over a period of years that he was worthless in that role. If he got paid extra $$$ for doing that job, he should pay it back! God only know who is ST coach now! They may have given it to one of the high school coaches that we hired so that it will be easier to "can" him if we are still as bad as we have been. If we can hire Chad Morris to revive the offense, Brent Venables to revive the defense, Brandon Streeter to make a world class QB out of Cole Stoudt in less than a month ( When "The Chad" couldn't do it in a whole season! ), why can't we find someone--anyone--to revive Special Teams? What say you, Dabo???

We don't have available space for a dedicated special teams coach. That would put us over the NCAA limit on coaches. If we were to eliminate one of the co-OCs or the QB coach, we could hire someone to do nothing but coach special teams - but neither is likely to happen. It is the flaw in our coaching structure for now.

We kick it in the endzone everytime and we win every game we won last year by at least 5 more points
This is our only st issue

Special teams play has two basic elements: offense and defense. Winning the games we won by 5 more points would have accomplished nothing. It's the one we lost that concerns me on special teams. And (among other things) that one was lost when we were in receiving mode - not kicking.

Uhh no, that was NOT our only ST issue.

Here are our 2015 ST rankings in various categories using Bill Connelly's S&P+ (out of 128 FBS teams)
Field Goal Efficiency 6 Punt Return Success Rate 126 Kick Return Success Rate 100 Punt Success Rate 49 Kickoff Success Rate 88
Huegel was very good. We were nearly dead last in punt returns, near the bottom in KO returns, very poor in kick coverage, and average in punting. Outside of Huegel coming onto the scene and being a revelation, our special teams were awful right across the board.

Without going into detail AGAIN and AGAIN, Pearman was only ONE of the coaches responsible for special teams. Time to let that old line go.

The truth is the truth. We should have won that game, and the UNC game should have been over with 5 minutes left. Neither was the case due to abject failures in a crucial phase of the game. Offense and defense were WAAAAAYYY too good and worked WAAAAYYYY too hard to have games put at risk because someone is asleep at the wheel on special teams prep.
