The athletes are burning down their own house

Aug 3, 2020, 5:40 PM

CFB might would have survived cv19, but it won't survive an athlete union.

My quick definitions:

Capitalism: an economic system where success is shared by most

Socialism: an economic system where failure is shared by all

CFB is quickly moving from the former to the latter. The irony is that CFB was a bridge out of poverty for many blacks. Now they're blowing the bridge. Oh well.

Approx 70% of FB Teams are filled with (Black ) American Young Men..

Aug 3, 2020, 5:56 PM

and they have gotten a jump in life with “free” schollies, as have (White) American Young Men.

Saying, wanting a little bit more of the pie they help make & bake isn’t a totally bad demand, like more living expenses in form of a stipend or whatever, but wanting 50% of the take isn’t happening.

but there will be compromise to some degree since it’s wise to shot for the sky when one goes into negotiations.

Let’s wait & see which college leaders give them the entire bank and which ones give them a used Kia to go get more pizzas.

In the end game it’s the ticket purchaser or college athletic donor who will be the ultimate boss..

something the NFL & Nascar have never fathomed.. but will sooner than later.

Could you please share which of the demands of the PAC 12

Aug 3, 2020, 7:25 PM

athletes you find offensive? Rather than being a victim of the reductive reasoning that shrinks everything you find objectionable to some sort of blanket pejorative like "socialism," wouldn't you prefer have a serious and thoughtful discussion of the players' actual demands?

For instance, which of these demands regarding Covid-19 protections bothers you most and why?

**Allow option not to play during the pandemic without losing athletics eligibility or spot on our team’s roster.
**Prohibit/void COVID-19 agreements that waive liability.
**Mandatory Safety Standards, Including COVID-19 Measures
**Player-approved health and safety standards enforced by a third party selected by players to address COVID-19, as well as serious injury, abuse and death.

Or do you find fault in their attempt to actually SAVE their own house rather than--as you said, "burning it down"--by trying to protect the smaller sports that are being slashed left and right?

**Larry Scott, administrators, and coaches to voluntarily and drastically reduce excessive pay.
**End performance/academic bonuses.
**End lavish facility expenditures and use some endowment funds to preserve all sports.
**As an example, Stanford University should reinstate all sports discontinued by tapping into their $27.7 billion endowment.

Or perhaps you vehemently disagree with the athletes trying to push forward with initiatives that give more opportunity and voice to black students. If so, please explain what specifically you object to in their terms below:

**Form a permanent civic-engagement task force made up of our leaders, experts of our choice, and university and conference administrators to address outstanding issues such as racial injustice in college sports and in society.
**In partnership with the Pac-12, 2% of conference revenue would be directed by players to support financial aid for low-income Black students, community initiatives, and development programs for college athletes on each campus.
**Form annual Pac-12 Black College Athlete Summit with guaranteed representation of at least three athletes of our choice from every school.

My guess those is you're somebody who is never going to think an athlete should make one extra dime beyond tuition for playing their sport, even as that sport makes the university and its officials a gazillion dollars. So I'm also guessing that the demands below REALLY rankle you. But which one rankles you the MOST? And why? And are there ANY of these economic/health/legal demands that you could stomach or no?

**Guaranteed Medical Expense Coverage
Medical insurance selected by players for sports-related medical conditions, including COVID- 19 illness, to cover six years after college athletics eligibility ends.
**Name, Image, and Likeness Rights & Representation
The freedom to secure representation, receive basic necessities from any third party, and earn money for use of our name, image, and likeness rights.
**Fair Market Pay, Rights, & Freedoms
Distribute 50% of each sport’s total conference revenue evenly among athletes in their respective sports.
**Six-year athletic scholarships to foster undergraduate and graduate degree completion.
**Elimination of all policies and practices restricting or deterring our freedom of speech, our ability to fully participate in charitable work, and our freedom to participate in campus activities outside of mandatory athletics participation.
**Ability of players of all sports to transfer one time without punishment, and additionally in cases of abuse or serious negligence.
**Ability to complete eligibility after participating in a pro draft if player goes undrafted and foregoes professional participation within seven days of the draft.
**Due process rights

Can't wait to hear your thoughts and to engage further with you on this complex issue of athlete empowerment and what it might mean for the industry of college sports.

Re: Could you please share which of the demands of the PAC 12

Aug 3, 2020, 7:57 PM

Most of these demands are subjective.
I expect you are under 30 years old and not very successful.. accordingly, you wish everyone else to be like you.

The current system works well. Most participants succeed; some wildly so. Not a single player was forced to participate. 99% of college students would line up tomorrow morning to sign up for the deal the athletes have voluntarily accepted.

Forming an employee players union will ruin college sports. The majority of revenue will dry up because the stakeholders will move on to other things.. And, since failure appeals to you, you will be happy with that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you're not going to engage with any of the actual

Aug 3, 2020, 8:04 PM

points made by the athletes. Got it.

And by the way, if you don't know what "subjective" means, there's no change in Hades you know what "socialism" means.

Good talk, bro.

For me it’s more the manner in which they approached it. Making demands are for thugs and diaper babies

So you don't like a thoughtful plan delivered in writing.

For one, I don't understand the demand to end performance/academic bonuses.

Performance bonuses are everywhere in the real working world.

Shouldn't the coaches be encouraging the players to do well academically in COLLEGE?

And then there is 50% of revenue. Do they not understand a lot of that revenue goes to cover expenses, like nice plane flights to games, equipment, medical, etc. That seems extreme to demand 50% of gross revenue.

College football and the education athletes get with it has worked well for years. Yes it brings in a lot of money, but have you seen the budgets and how much of the income is spent. Many colleges do not even break even. Where is all the money supposed to come from. Each of these players are free to start work rather than go to college to play football. They have a choice. But one choice is not to make demands for something that is not there.

You don't have a clue.

Aug 4, 2020, 4:13 AM [ in reply to Could you please share which of the demands of the PAC 12 ]

There is so much wrong with this, it isn't even funny. You people are living in Neverland. These kids should be immediately cut, and replaced by people who want to be there, end of story.

If Black players want to go create their own Minor League, they have every right, and I truly hope they do. What they will find is that the business model that draws Alumni as built-in customers isn't available to them, and competing against Colleges and Pros will be an XFL-sized b*tch. They'll also rightly find themselves out on the street after their "career" with no University degree. But at least then, with their own league, they can put all the money they want into Minor sports, austerity measures, task forces and financial aid programs.

IT IS A FREE F*CKING COUNTRY - GO COMPETE, MF'er.

I personally agree that players should get some compensation, but that needs to be:

1) the same for every player;
2) deferred until retirement in the form of a 401k;
3) based on gaining a degree;
4) limited to 20-25% of total revenues;
5) is reduced as a total payout by Capital and Building Investments born by programs LONG BEFORE the current group of players were involved; and
6) because this isn't a league full of seasoned professionals, any "wage" costs of players will taken 2nd seat to the greater costs of Professional Coaches who have the Ability and Desire to lead and mentor young adults.

This ain't the Pros, MF'er; take your ESPN sh*t down the road.

I have no problem with the players making demands. I also have no problem with universities responding in the manner they see fit, including dismissal of the student. Walk into to your place of employment and lay down similar demands to your management...free and extended health care, a demand in reduction of salaries for your upper management who you think earn too much money in salaries and bonuses, demand the formation of committees to address problems your company probably has nothing to do with. Add the threat to quit if those demands aren't met. For the cherry on top, make sure to go public with it.

They are following the principle of capitalism. The athletes are the commodity that everybody wants.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THIS is an absolute BS argument in extreme

Aug 4, 2020, 3:42 AM

Football has been played without top tier athletes for years in smaller conferences and the Ivy League. The game will go on with or without them.

Competitiveness isn't lost by losing the Top Tier. And Performance Is only marginally reduced.

Simle question: if Trevor Lawrence or Deshaun Watson were to quit or leave (have left), would you have still shown up to see Chase Brice spin it? Thought so.

These young men VASTLY overrate their importance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Supply far exceeds demand.

Aug 4, 2020, 4:28 AM [ in reply to Re: The athletes are burning down their own house ]

If the top tier athletes broke off and played in a minor league, the end result would be that nobody would give a #### about them, those that didn't make the jump to the NFL would end up broken, broke, and without any education or prospects, and college football would be nearly as popular as it is today while being played by slightly less talented players.

Aug 4, 2020, 7:06 AM [ in reply to Re: The athletes are burning down their own house ]

Not true. COLLEGE FOOTBALL is the commodity everybody wants. If the individual player is going to play, then of course the colleges will compete to get that player to play for them, rather than for another team (assuming doing so provides a competitive advantage). But take that player out of circulation (such as that player boycotting or not actively participating, a la Josh Belk) then everyone simply moves on as if the player never existed.

I’m confused why you think people wanting to be paid for their work is socialism? I don’t agree with blowing up the current system but players wanting to be paid for their work and sell their likeness in the free market is capitalism.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Aug 3, 2020, 10:23 PM

Just use the word "socialism" to describe anything they deem as a negative system. Without regard for what it actually means.

Truth is, the current system (where everyone gets the same benefits) is much more socialist than the proposed one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THIS is a lie - the current system is nothing more

Aug 4, 2020, 3:52 AM

than an outgrowth of amateurism in a club sport. The fact that this is where it started is undeniable.

It's also funny that people charge Coaches and AD's with creating a "plantation mentality" when in fact those Coaches and AD's generally worked to keep the Black athlete out of the sport until the 1960's. You can't have it both ways.

Finally, until the 1980's, the amount of popularity and money in the sport wasn't such as to create excess economic profits. The largesse in the sport is a very late result, and thus is completely separate from the historical amateurism issue.

This is nothing more than a Money grab by people who want to see themselves as Victims. Victimhood is all the rage because it gives the bearer a perceived negotiating advantage.

The whole thing is disgusting.

Its the same mindset that results in them burning down their own neighborhoods and killing each other to "protest" something they don't like. Makes no sense to tbose of us blessed with the ability to reason but good luck getting them to ever change. Burning down your house, while you're still in it, to voice your displeasure at it not being big enough will only result in your death or being homeless.
