Yesterday I watched an interview with Joe Namath talking about his

recruiting by in his day. He said that one school (without mentioning who it was) offered him $6,000 a month and a new car ever two years. He said that at the time his father made $5,100 a year. When asked why he did not go to that school he said his uncle asked him if he wanted to play for a school the cheats? He said that all he got at Alabama was $15 a month laundry money and he eagerly awaited his weekly letter from his mother with a five dollar bill enclosed. What would $6,000 in 1964 be equivalent to today?

Is this the same guy that I trust for my Medicare questions? Joking of course...that is interesting and he gave up 6 figures in today's dollars.

It would amount to what the ugay players are making, almost.

$6000 per month in 1964 / $72,000 per year = $730,000 per year in 2024

They recruited him very hard before losing out to Bama

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Namath was all set to go to Maryland, but he couldn't make the ACC 800 requirement on his SAT. His next option was Penn State, and MD didn't want that because they were scheduled to play PS. The MD coach contacted Bear Bryant at Bama encouraging him recruit Namath.

Howard Schnellenberger was one of Bryant's assistants at Bama and had coached Namath's brother at some point. Bryant sent Schnellenberger to sign Namath, and the rest is history.

Namath didn't go to Maryland because he couldn't qualify academically for ACC play, but he did qualify to play for Bama in the SEC.

That is how I remember it happening, and Bear told the same story in a book that I still have. I have no idea what Maryland and the other schools were offering, nor what Bama offered. $6K per month in the early 60s is just not believable, and only the very elite pro athletes were making that much. $6K per year is more likely.

I think this number is believable. In the late 70's allegedly BB players at Marshall were getting new cars. Probably leased, but still we are talking Marshall in the southern conference at the time.
