Why You Would Call A Timeout With 7 SEC To Go

As soon as the ball crossed the center line in game against NCSU,the last time out should have been called to set up a play to win the game. Why this should always be done is because:
1. It gives the team a chance to settle down and get out of a panic mode. 2. It let's coach calmly draw up a play and coach says to team, don't panic, we got this exactly where we want it. We execute this play, we win. We've practiced this a million times. They don't get another chance to score. 3. Team knows exactly what is to be done. 4. Team goes back on court with a plan to win and are not running down court with their hair on fire.
That's what a good coach would do and would have his team prepared for those kinds of finishes.
Brownell is not a good coach.

in that situation, and we lost, you would be on here complaining about it. You would say that the team should have been coached to know what to do in that situation and that calling a timeout was wrong because it gave NC State a chance to set up their defense.
You know it’s true.

Wrong. As usual. 14 years of being a nothing burger in the ACC proves it. If football results were that bad, fans would revolt. But you would probably love it.

And since you mentioned the ACC, Brownell does better than any other Clemson coach in ACC play, so what you're saying is that our entire history is a nothing burger in the conference.
In that case, it’s ridiculous that you are so upset about this.

This is an experienced team. Those boys knew what they needed to do and Brad trusted the players to make plays. Calling the last TO gives the opportunity for the defense to set, trap, and if there’s a difficulty getting the ball in you have no TO to rely on.
It was a coaching call that doesn’t define who he is as a coach and I’m more than good with him doing either

Definition of stupidity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. I believe, your Crush, did the same thing the last 1 point lose at home!!!!!!

I have no problem with not calling time out. In that situation. The less input brad has the better chance we have winning.

drawing a foul. When you call timeout, it also allows the D to get set.
You can justify playing it either way, but you can’t justify the turnovers and jump ball late. Those are the plays that cost Clemson the win.

The final play was fine. Got a good drive to the basket and a foul should have been called. Also left enough time for a potential put back on a miss that we wouldn’t have had if we called timeout. Going 4+ minutes late in the game without a field goal and failing to protect the ball cost us that win.

Yep. It was the overall lousy play down the stretch that cost the Tigers. Poor shooting and terrible defense. The final play was simply the culmination of that.

Call your last time out in that situation would not have been a wise move. If you fail to get the ball inbounds after your last timeout has been used within 5 seconds, you lose without even getting a shot for the chance to win the game.

People, teams practice last second shoots and plays. We did it when I was coaching, I'm sure every team does it. So most times, you are not really drawing up a completely new play. You practice 10 seconds with teh ball, you practice 5 sends etc. A time out should have been called to get everyone on teh same page and to what was going to happen. And if possible, you want the shot to leave time for a quick rebound and shot if missed. .

Then why are we so bad at it?
This is multiple games with either not getting off a shot or taking a bad shot.

No time out in that situation. Team should know play with 10-12 sec

Good teams can get better shot in transition with only a few seconds on clock. Got to knock the shot down.
It’s really something that should be installed preseason and practiced weekly. Time outs give the defense time to set up and if necessary, change personnel. In addition good defenses will force the ball to be caught moving away from basket or even thrown to backcourt. At best offensive team loses a couple of seconds _ at worse 3-5 seconds.
Play fast, execute and hit the shots. Of course, having a confident scorer (I.e. money player) handling the ball helps.

You are exactly right. I’m certain that the team has practiced many many times on ways to score in a few seconds.
Opponents work on defending this too!
If I’m a top notch high school player I’m not sure that I would want to play for a team whose fans didn’t support the coach and program. If you don’t like what you are seeing on the court… don’t watch AND shut the F up!

I thought it was smart NOT to call a timeout at the end of the game. It would have given their D a chance to set up. Chase has just got to make the play in that situation.

What I am not fine with is our lack of being able to get 50 - 50 loose balls. We have not done this all season and I have seen nothing that makes me think it will get better.

I don’t like the idea of calling timeout if it’s going to be less than 10 seconds once you reach beyond half court. If they defend the inbounds pass well then the ball has to go into the backcourt. Now you’re back where you started trying to get the play executed. If you have say 12-15 secs then you have time to run the primary play and the backup option if they defend well. I assume when it’s coming off free throws the coach has already diagrammed the plan to get up court within 10 or less seconds so no excuse for not handling the chaos. For certain they are practicing that scenario all the time, or atleast they should be.
