They cleared several acres of land on the left side and now this abandoned mansion is visible. Never seen this before.

That’s exit 21. Is OP talking about the mansion across the street from Waffle House on exit 19? They are going to tear it down I think.

Sally Rose's son is Buck Fulp, former race car driver, who once drove in the 24 Hrs of LeMans.

Would love to go in and explore some. I love historic houses. Guess I will read up on when it was built and how long it’s been abandoned at some point. Be a nice house to rehab. Put up some privacy and with it sitting so far off the road not a bad spot. Only busy time is game days.

Does anyone know why the house fell into disrepair? I’m guessing it had something to do with the demise of the textile mills.

on Old Piedmont Hwy as a teen. It was called the Sally Plant, which I assume was named for her. It was 1973, me and my buddies were 16, just finished 10th grade, and looking for summer jobs. There was a big We're Hiring sign and they hired all 4 of us on the spot. $1.60 an hour for nasty back breaking work. But we were happy to have those jobs and stayed on several years. Especially because we could work during high school on the "mini shift" M-F 4 to 8pm and all day Sat... 28 hours a week.

Buck Fulp was a pretty nice guy back in my day. I saw him race sports car several times. I first met him in Spartanburg When I was a ChapmanHigh School boy of sixteen. He was racing at the old airport in a sports car. I’m not sure what he was driving but it may have been a Bocar that was an experimental General Motors machine comparable to a Corvette.
I’m pretty sure he switched to A Ferrari later on.
While a student at Clemson in the early 60’s he let one of my buddies in Forestry schools borrow his “boat” one night to cruise around Lake Hartwell. I’ll never forget that experience!!! A once in a lifetime adventure.

Buck Fulp was quite a character. I remember him racing in the early to mid-60's when I was in high school and college. A friend of mine in Greenville, who raced Corvettes some and bought the first Shelby Mustang in Greenville was a good friend of Buck's. I also saw him race at the airport and he was driving something like a McClaren, or some exotic race car, not a Corvette. I know it made a lot more noise than the other cars on the track.
I was pretty sure that was Sally Abney, Buck's mother's house.

Buck Fulp and my uncle were very good friends. Many stories though I don't remember the details well enough to repeat them. Suffice to say they had a good time!!!
