I don't think there is any question that UNC's Board of Trustees want out. The problem obviously is what the powers in Raleigh will allow. Worse, UNC's BOT can't make the call to get out of the ACC. That decision now rests with the UNC system governors board, which has made it pretty clear that UNC and NC State must be a packaged deal. This is random speculation, but my guess is that this is why Randy Woodson (NCSU president) flipped on deciding to invite Cal and Stanford to the ACC. It bought him more time to make UNC and NC State a packaged deal. That package was then created by the powers in Raleigh in January 2024

It's interesting that SC legislators and chancellors are not forcing SCU to support Clemson entry to the SEC as it benefits all South Carolina families, residents and taxpayers. UVA was forced by then Gov. Gov Kaine to support Va Tech admission to ACC. And it looks like UNC is getting the same orders on NCSU joining UNC for B1G or SEN admission.
