To the Portal / NIL Doom & Gloomers

I know there’s a lot of negative press around the portal / NIL, how it’s bad for the game and ruining the sport and professionalizing it, etc., etc., etc. but I don’t buy it. Is it adding a layer of frustration and complexity to recruiting and player development? Absolutely. But it doesn’t change how at the end of the day the young men that come through the door are going to leave after a few short years. Whether its the portal, the NFL, or in the case of the vast majority of D1 players, start their life after football. Sure the the current landscape may shorten their stay with us, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really change that much. And it certainly doesn’t ruin college football in the slightest.
The NFL pays players big money, they have a very competitive and popular product, yet many of us could really care less about it. Why? Because theres something missing, something that sets college football apart from its professional counterpart. It’s not the players, the coaches, the sponsors, or really anything that happens between the lines for that matter. The thing that always has made college football special, the thing that makes us count down the days til kickoff is something that the NFL will never have, and the NIL / Portal can never take away, tradition.
Tradition is what makes college football special, and I’m not just talking about the big ones like having the band in the stadium or running down the hill. The traditions that make seven Saturdays a year in our little corner of the upstate special, the ones that bring well over 100,000 people to a town of under 20,000, are the little things. Things like going downtown and getting a “Beat …” sticker. Things grabbing a drink with your longtime friends in bars you used to frequent back in the “glory days,” and even if the name has changed 7 times since you graduated you still probably call it by the old name. It’s meeting up with old family and friends at their tailgates they’ve had for dacades with great food, better hospitality, and no shortage of sports banter. It’s seeing the little ones run around with jerseys and tossing footballs dreaming of playing inside memorial stadium. For away games its driving around to 6 different banks to find enough $2 bills to stamp with a tiger paw and spend in the visiting city.
I’m sure all of you have your own traditions and memories that make it special for you. But as far as I’m concerned, as long as we the fans keep showing up, keep our traditions going, keep passing these experiences down to future generations, no NIL, portal, or expanded playoff system is ever going to be able take that away from us.

nor keep up with the TP and NIL bs.
What matters to me is the tradition (as the poster points out), the quality of product on the field and the passion (from the players).
Go Tigers!

Football is less popular with younger people than in years past.
Plus, too many fans will lose interest when their teams aren't included in whatever the top tier of college football turns out to be.

We can agree to disagree.
Obvious there are one and dones to the portal for monetary reasons. Some believe that is good for the athlete. I disagree. Probably a low number of these guys will graduate one would assume. I would also say at that age how many will take that money and actually turn it in to something long term. They hold classes on this stuff in your rookie season in the NFL. Has to be a pain for the coaches in not being able to actually build a 2-3 year plan in not knowing who will and will not be in.
It sucks to be honest, and I see nothing but a diminishing of the end product in maintaining fan interest. Nothing better than to see a guy committed and play at least 3 years. Us as fans watch them mature and get good at their craft which could propel them to an NFL opportunity. I will add it’s nice to feel a bond between the university and in following them in the NFL. Kendrick made it to the league and I have zero interest in what he does in the league. In my mind he was Ga Bulldog. I’m not sure I’m actually doing a good job at explaining my thoughts, but maybe some of you can understand where I’m coming from.

I disagree.
I have very little interested in college basketball because of all the 1 and done #### plus the constant transfers.
Football is heading that way.
I will still watch Clemson but my general interest in college football is way down and if that's true for others then college football as a whole will suffer.

It's done man. There is little, if any, connection at all to the Universities anymore. It's completely lawless and many of the players (not all) are roaming mercenaries. The Playoffs would be more accurately called Ann Arbor, Michigan vs Tuscaloosa, Alabama in game 1. And in the nightcap, Seattle, Washington plays Austin, Texas.

If we become uncompetitive due to the involvement of big money then the fans will not show up as they do today. You must not have been in the stands when Tommy West or Hootie Ingram were here. You could hear a pin drop in the stands. Unless things change Dabo will not continue to work in such an environment.

Well, if things are gonna change, then Dabo has to be the one to change them. The NIL & portal genies are not going back in the bottle.
Adapt or die !
