Reviews mixed on Jaguars drafting Clemson duo

New Jacksonsville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said late Thursday night that he had identified drafting the duo of Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne a couple months ago. The move surprised some, especially pundits who have had the idea cemented that taking a running back in the NFL draft first round i Read Update »

I think Urban figured, why re-invent the wheel?

One thing about Urban, at least at the college level: he's brutally effective. He knows you beat people with edges and he procures those and leans on them.

He knows Trevor's the best QB in the draft at what he wants to do. He knows Travis is the best RB in the draft at what he wants to do. There's a reason he was following Clemson around offering everybody Dabo offered; he was recruiting the exact same profile of player to run the exact same kind of offense.

So why complicate stuff? Go grab the best guys for what you do, and go do that.

I guess we see if Meyer is a Steve Spurrier or a Jimmy Johnson when it comes to scaling up from college to the NFL. My guess is it's closer to the latter.

Two great talented players, with winning attitudes.
They fit his system, as the best impact players available for his plans.
You will see ETN blocking, running, screens, lining up in the slot. They already have a back for pounding the line running the ball, TL and ETN are there for putting points on the board! Definitely needs pass protection!

Smart move, Urban may be a jerk, but he is really football smart. I wish them success.
Now he needs to load up with BEEF and defenders....

Thank God that NFL coaches aren't really responsible

Apr 30, 2021, 11:47 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Reviews mixed on Jaguars drafting Clemson duo ]

for developing character the way college coaches are presumed to, or Trevor and Travis would be screwed.

I agree Urban Liar is a very effective X's and O's coach and should be good for the Jags. As for Travis, I think he assumed Buffalo would snap him up if they didn't, plus James Robinson isn't HIS guy. Good players being pushed aside because they were part of the old regime happens every year. The Jags definitely have a plan of utilizing both guys, or moving Robinson. As a Dolphins fan, I'd trade for him.

Urban is the Coach K of the football world

Apr 30, 2021, 11:09 AM

he can only win with great talent. When the talent is no longer there he will start to have "health/family" issues. He better hope the GM and the rest of the staff can draft/sign players that are exceptional so that he can win.

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

Doesn't every coach need talent to win especially in the NFL?

I suspect that Urban will be a little too much for your average battle-tested NFL professional, but if he wins the veterans will tolerate him and buy in.

If a pro players can deal with the Bill Belichick's of the NFL, Urkel Meyer will be easy to deal with!!!

The truth about JAX offense last year

Apr 30, 2021, 12:12 PM

They were DEAD LAST in Offensive production last season. They only had 16 explosive plays all season. It is a MAJOR, glaring problem and one that has to be addressed immediately. Robinson was a very nice surprise for them last year. But, somebody had to touch the ball... and he benefited from their inability to pass the ball.

Jacksonville had the luxury of 2 first round picks. They checked off MAJOR boxes for that offense. Now they get 2 second round picks today. They've got so many picks this season that they'll be able to fill all of their gaps through the draft.

They have a ton of cap space as well. They definitely could be very good very soon having Trevor on a rookie deal which seems to be a trend in the NFL. Rookie deal qb and load up the talent around.
