This seems like one of those rare opportunities for the portal to come back into play. Or, we may wind up red-shirting one we have in the fold now.

That was a stupid thing to say. With the talent that CJ had as a player he will surely become a really good coach after he has had a few years as coach especially with coaches like Garrett Riley, Matt Luke, Tom Allen, Chris Rumph, and Dabo Swinney. With all that coaching experience helping to mentor CJ Spiller into a coach I'm sure he will become one of the better RB coaches in the country. Also, with the love that CJ has for Clemson and Dabo, it will make it really tough for another school to pull him away from Clemson...

It was stupid to suggest Spiller move on and equally dumb to suggest CJ’s talent while playing has anything to do with his coaching or recruiting ability. Dabo and Matt Luke were walkon’s in college. Jeff Scott, Venables and Elliott were nothing special as players. One has nothing to do with the other. CJ seems to be a good coach and an average recruiter. He needs polish and support to get to the next level IMO

Etienne was a 4 star.
The composite rankings had him ranked 216 overall and the #17 RB.
Etienne had offers from Alabama, LSU, Miami, Oregon, Tennessee, and Texas AM. Plus 14 other P4 offers.

I agree he was a 4 star overall. Some people get confused because they see Rivals had him rated as a 3 star.

People lean on and leverage their playing experience and Spiller has plenty of that between college and Pro. He has a lot to teach and give and some good coaching mentors to help him hone those skills. It is likely he will get better with more time in the saddle.

CJ is a fan favorite and may be a good coach but he needs some help with recruiting. At this point, we need to hand out some more offers to top RBs. I do think we will have to hit the Portal soon unless we get some traction with top RBs.

Absolutely. UGA still in the mix for the top RB Savion Hiter. If savion commits to uga, then Lamar will never see the field. Probably be in the portal next year.

Lamar will sit behind Gideon Davidson too.
It's pretty routine to stack blue chip RBs on top of one another at the schools who routinely play for national championships.
As I noted earlier , the 2016 Alabama team we beat in the national championship had five ( 5 ) NFL caliber RBs on their roster simultaneously
They indeed all went on to play in the NFL.

CJ was a gem on the field but that doesn't always translate to coaching. Look to the portal for now and get CJ some help/coaching on his own performance going forward. Or find someone else that can get the job done for Clemson.

Clemson should be landing GD caliber backs every year.
Blue chip prospects are a must to compete for championships.
Flood Texas with offers.
As I've said repeatedly Texas is flush with RBs
Close to 20 every year in the top 50.
We should not have to settle for a RB ranked # 116 ( Terry )

Who has been the RB coach at UNC under Brown? They have had a pretty good run of stud RBs.

Like it or not recruiting is a key component of being a college position coach. You obviously need to be able to make them better players but before that you need to get them on campus. No idea why we offer so few RBs and then have to scramble. There's no doubt in my mind we could have gotten a four star RB if we hadn't fixated on only a couple of guys. Don't know whose philosophy that is but it needs to evolve.

Look at how the OL recruiting has cycled up with a proven coach. Unfortunately these HS players were babies when Spiller was a stud. He hasnt been a proven coach to date.

ETN was a late offer and worked out pretty good. Let’s see whom is next.
That was a great find, but an outlier. Fallback to 3 star RBs is why the Tigers have the RB room they have right now. A future stud in Gideon but an ankle or shoulder injury away from repeating the issues they had last season when Mafah got hurt. Plus he’s still a raw freshman. The rest of the room has all kinds of question marks. Haynes still on knee rehab, Green unable to gain coaches trust, EZ running too high and coughing up the ball, Randall, mostky an unknown who has to prove he can protect Cade. On and on. It’s replacing Oline as the annual “why can’t they recruit elite talent”? In the end, Oline was fixed by hiring a proven coach with recruiting chops. The solution right now is for Dabo and Spiller to sign two pre-developed RB transfers in January from the G5 level who have plenty of reps and looking for rev share.

That Clemson cannot seem to consistently lineup elite level, running back talent the way schools like Alabama and Georgia do.

Perhaps too honest for many Tnetters. Agree Davidson appears to be on his own in terms of potential high tier talent. Eziomume looks like next up. Would have liked to have seen Haynes spell debilitated Mafah more last year - Mafah was clearly not at his best. But recovering from ACL surgery in one year is rare. The rest of the roster is unlikely to help and may not see much p.t.
So hoping Davidson and Eziomume get the development and reps they need this summer.

Maybe stop offering such low numbers at the position and go after multiple guys? Have to start from square one and try to beat out schools that have offered 2 years ago after the first few that are offered say no

What about Jarvis Green? No mention in the article and no mention in any of these posts. He had a beautiful TD catch against Texas and I don't understand how his name falls through the crack? I'm 100% behind Dabo but would love to hear his honest thoughts of why Jarvis Green didn't see more playing time. A fan of his in highschool and was thrilled that he got an offer from Clemson late. Really hope he stays on the roster and is giving more opportunities . Go Tigers!!

At this point i guess the coaches need to decide if they want to use a scholly on a RB who is unlikely to ever see the field or oversign at a different position to bring in a potential contributor.

The thing is during Dabo's tenure I think only LSU and Alabama have had more runningbacks drafted to the NFL than Clemson and we are tied with Georgia. I would think they would use this as a major recruitng point. As undersung as our running back program seems to be right now Clemson historically knows how to get a running back to his ultimate goal. Why we do not seem to be a place RB's are begging to get into and why we allegedly have a weak RB room is puzzling.
Is it just NIL? I have no idea. Is it "what have you done for me lately? We have had a runningback drafted in each of the last two seasons...so there is that.
