TIL a word meant the total opposite of what I thought it did

I heard somebody on TV say "He ghosted me". Actually I have heard that term a few times over the past few months or so at various times.
Well, to me being "ghosted" would mean somebody haunted, or stalked, or followed me around everywhere. Because if you are visited by the traditionally defined ghost, or see ghosts, they are right there with you, scaring the crap out of you,(unless they are the benevolent ghost of grandma or something). That's what I thought they meant - someone was screwing with them and wouldn't leave them alone.
I have now come to find out that it actually means that the person suddenly and totally disappeared. But that's not what ghosts do.
