My elderly mother, who dislikes Chris Rock, thought it was ok that Will Smith slapped him and nothing happened. We engaged in a philosophical exchange about if Betty White had been the emcee and made the joke. Would it have been ok for Will to slap the snot out of her and would the LAPD then get involved?

Funny thing is, I liked Will Smith because of Men in Black, and I didn’t care for Chris Rock before, but now I have switched allegiances. I dislike a bully.

Not saying it was right, it was not. Clearly my position was colored by my dislike of Chris Rock. Have heard him make some really offensive and not funny takes and just feel like he had it coming. But I acknowledge that is not really the right way to think. Anybody else and my position probably takes a 180 turn.

Chris Rock was doing his job as a comedian and he is in my top 5 of all time. The joke was nowhere near crossing the line and was basically the heckling that stars get at these things.
Smith laughed before seeing her face and I’m sure she saw that in the replay and probably gave him grief about it too. Sorry, but it’s not like she is dying of cancer or he joked about her F’ing their Son’s friend. She’s also in the rare group that looks just as good with a bald head and I’m sure she knows it.
If Terry Crews was hosting, I bet we wouldn’t have heard a peep. Just thank your lucky stars it wasnt Jimmy Kimmel or we’d never hear the end of the racial takes from both sides.
The Scientology angle makes sense. Or it was pre-meditated as a publicity stunt on his part. Personally, I think it’s a sign of the time. Humor and nuance are lost. Everyone is so sensitive and have to prove how PC they are. Dissenting views are shouted down or deplatformed instead of discussed and debated.

Look up the close ups, slo-mo, and still frames. Chris Rock clearly knew the smack was coming. It was pre-planned.

And Smith may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is smart enough NOT to risk 100s of millions over a publicity stunt, he was out of his mind that night.
and most importantly he was asked to resign from the academy, he will never work in that town again, at least on anything meaningful. His whole "Nice Guy" schtick got exposed, and his career is now over. If it were a stunt, he would have owned up to it by now, as would have Rock. This never happened.
