The rise and fall of SCar confidence
Apr 17, 2015, 9:03 AM

Two years ago before the SCar game I posted that it had taken multiple seasons for them to build momentum and confidence but that one single win from our Tigers would set them back to square one. It is kind of amazing how that has played out.
Starting in 2009 SCar won the first of their 5 games after a decade of dominance by the Tigers.
Then Clemson crumbled in the CWS and SCar gained an air of confidence from the National Championship.
The HBC even said in 2010 that the program had more confidence because of the Baseball teams win and they officially started a streak for the first time in 40 years.
From that point forward (minus WVU) Clemson thrived in big games but seemed to lose to SCar simply because of the mental edge.
It took 3 more years but finally we got the win. Now the pieces have started to crumble...
Scar has lost confidence. There football team, their fans and now baseball. As long as we keep the pressure on we should never have to endure a streak like that again. It is great to be a Clemson Tiger.

A big part was back to back abysmal recruiting years

for Clemson in 2009 and 2010. And all the elite in-state players choosing SCar at that time made a perfect storm for them. Well the roles have reversed now.

"team" on the field in 2012 & 2013, both ending in disappointing losses.

I agree that we had the majority of the better players it was just that they had the better players at key positions where we lacked big time. I would certainly say that Dabo and staff has filled the voids that we had in those areas quite well.

2014. a back up qb in his first start[?] "wrecked" clemson in dv and then that debacle in willy brice with wr passes...almost makes me as sick as the fsu game & 7 for 17 in doak.
the biggest difference maker was jc in 2013 and clemson stopped running at him for whatever reason, idk?

True, but those last 2 losses are on Morris

Sometimes no matter how great coaches are, they out think themselves. In both games the old Danny Ford run over them offense was working and Morris had to go Chad on them.
Morris did great things at Clemson. 98 out 100 things were done right by him. But, he would often abandon the running game too early and his QB's didn't improve much under his guidance.

game day caller for big games. He never would just run it down the opponents throat when it was working.

Fact is, they were given a huge recruiting gift with our coaching change in 2008…That whole interim coach thing with Dabo really hurt us recruiting wise that first year and Spurrier, who had been at SC for 3 full years at that point took full advantage.…I believe we signed only 12 guys that year and SC signed something like 27…That gave them a HUGE talent advantage just from a numbers stand point and it showed those first 2-3 years under Dabo. I feel like we caught up with them in about 2012 or 2013, but they still beat us because they held a mental edge over us. Good thing for us is that mental edge vanished with our win last year and we’ve now blown past them in talent…Even better for us is that I don’t see them catching back up any time soon when consider Spurrier’s age and they fact that he’s bound to leave in the next couple years….If they don’t hire the right coach to replace him we could receive an even bigger gift than they received in 2008. One that could allow us to enjoy a period of greater dominance over them than we’ve never had.

The WVU loss was the best loss we've ever had. It got us where we are today. We've only been embarrassed quiet as bad only once since then. That game was against FSU in 2013. Truth is, though, WV brought us Venables. He has been a breath of fresh air. He has brought such a physical edge to,this program.
Speaking of FSU...........our special teams lost us the 2012 game and some critical moments lost us the game in 2014. Catch 22 though. If Stoudt hits Leggett for that easy pass and touchdown, we probably don't have Watson come into the game. So many issues in that game that it literally sickens me to think about it.

We got the tail end of SOS successful coaching
Apr 17, 2015, 3:56 PM

SOS has(d) coaching skills, regardless of his like or unlikeability, and they have petered out with age and lesser effort. He is now at SC for the salary and something to do. No doubt our Clemson Tigers have all the momentum (at least in foosball).
