It wasn’t too long ago that I saw the Republicans as the adults in the room.
Of course when Trump is asked about the next Pope…the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion people and 20% of the US population…of course he instantly makes it about himself. He just got back from the Pope’s funeral and shows so little regard for the role and the faith that he casually says that he…a twice-divorced married non-Catholic, would love the job.
And his sycophants, of course, fall right in step like a bunch of 2D minions of a teen movie antagonist. “Ha haaaa, yeah Biff! You da man!”
I am aware he was joking (although I have no doubt that he believes he would make a great Pope and is more than qualified). It’s just all so unserious from a man in a position that requires some level of awareness as to the weight of their words and actions.

showing a lack of respect to anything that isn’t Trump (or…oddly….Putin). It’s yet another example of his lack of awareness or appreciation for the office he holds and the weight of the words and actions of the person who holds it. Of what he represents as POTUS. And Grahams’s response is indicative of a doormat Republican Party who is just there to preserve their power and kowtow to Trump.
Honestly the main reason I think this joke is a non-issue in the public is because of the MOUNTAIN of other times he has said something so outrageous. We are numb. Imagine Obama saying he would like to be Pope, shortly after attending the funeral of the previous Pope. The right would eviscerate him for his arrogance. Imagine GWB saying it. He would be mocked for such an embarrassing and inappropriate comment.

I didn't think it was that big of a deal, especially since he immediately pivoted to a more serious response.
An odd personality trait I've noticed about Trump is I think he is actually aware of his own arrogance. Most people who are really arrogant typically seem unaware. From a psychological perspective, the man is fascinating.

The Republican party does not exist right now.
It is a party of one person, Trump.
Trump has 100% eliminated any power that Republicans in Congress would typically have. They have 100% abdicated to Trump.
Look at the cabinet officials, they have much less power than usual. Marco Rubio has tea with people while Trump does the negotiations.
There is no Republican party right now.
