I think they just announced that he'd be back in 2026 which is probably the best news I've heard all day.
This new AD didn't hire Mainieri so I'd totally understand wanting to rid yourself of him and bring in your own guy. But he's also got like a $5.2 million buyout, which is chump change compared to some of these football coach buyouts, but $5.2 million is not nothing.
I kind of thought they'd come to some handshake agreement where they pay him a portion to step down and blame it on "health reasons" or something. Mainieri is a legendary coach, floundering around at the bottom of the SEC for a few years is only going to hurt his legacy.

It was a bad hire from the start. I tried to tell USC fans & they didn’t want to hear it. The Gamecocks are going to regret the day they didn’t hire Landon Powell when they had the chance. I think that would have been a home run hire. Nobody really believes this USC team is going to be any better next year under its current leadership so buyout or not it’s better to cut ties sooner than later. As a Tiger fan I hope they do keep him because it’s not going to get any better.

I'm really glad that they were too stupid to hire Landon. I would have hated that they hired him because he is really a good guy and outstanding coach. A t some point not too many years ago they had a chance to hire a former player as their golf coach, but passed and he went to Alabama. A few years later they were the national champions. Let's not interfere with their choices for athletic coaches.

It is pretty great that the second best coach in the history of their school--Ray Tanner--is also the worst AD in the history of their school. Outside of Shane Beamer he botched every single coaching hire he made.

He should’ve just stayed away from Columbia
But, if they’re going to stick with him I’d then have to imagine Monte and Terry Rooney both have a chance to be fired.
