Slept on it

Here's my thoughts after sleeping on it (at least for a few hours (work today, which sucks)
1. We are absolutely improved on defense. People are expecting Venables production, but where we started from thats basically impossible right this second. We clearly have improved though. I truly think had this been last years defense, LSU would have scored 35-42 points (even given a called back TD blah blah) 2. Tackling got better, much better, but still needs improvement. 3. Skill without size doesn't matter. (Avieon Terrell is a dog, but 5'9/10 dogs cant guard 6'6" WRs) see the TD. Good position, just didn't matter. WR was huge and used body as shield and there's nothing he can do. Sometimes genetics actually do make the difference. 4. Im so sick and tired of seeing a DB actually in a good position, yet getting called for PI because they cant stop grabbing. If you're flat beat, and preventing a TD, thats one thing. When you're in a hip pocket and handfighting thats another. Clean it up fellas. 5. Jaedyn Lukus is the most talented player that takes the worst angles I've ever seen in my life. Not sure if he's uncoachable or what. 6. Offensive line doesn't have the dogs. Luke is proven. If you cant run the football against a 268lb DT, you're flat out not good. This shocked me. I would have lined up and pounded it. 7. WRs are good obviously but are still acting as if they're freshmen without Antonio Williams out there. They need some arrogance and moxy. Too passive. 8. Our TEs are better than I thought they'd be. We should use them more often. 9. Cade still has that will hair in him when the play breaks down. That chunk it up syndrome. It's a little better, but still there. He's a gun slinger, but I feel like we ask him to run too much structured stuff. He needs to drop back, READ THE DEFENSE, and make the throws. 10. Attack vertically, along the seams and middle of the field. Everything is outside the hashes. 11. Play calling is feast or famine. We do things that down and distance wise make zero sense. Pass on first down, then run on 2 and 10, then pass on 3rd and 10. Running a football on 2nd and 10 when you aren't really running it well is a recipe for 3 and out. 12. Dialed up misdirection is the key to offensive play calling. LSU did that a lot in the second half and it worked wonders. We just line up and "do Clemson". Well doing Clemson is getting us beat.
13. We have some good pieces, and I think defensively we have what we need, but offensively I just dont see us getting much better. Its scheme and playcalling consistency

14. Oline must block...that was the most pathetic display of protection/ blocking I've seen in awhile. All I heard all off season was how great they were...major fail!

Yeah, I agree. Sky isn’t falling after all!
I am starting to wonder: are the Riley’s geniuses against avg competition and fools against legit contenders?
No secret that LSU was undervalued - in some ways they reminded me of the nightmare we faced in Joe Burrow.

I can’t recall many designed runs with Cade actually working. Then again how many of them are called on like 3rd and 8 with a loaded box?

Agree. The projection of the designed QB run is so excruciating to watch. Anyone can see it coming from a mile away. That fake ball to the ear as if you're passing it looks so unnatural it isnt even funny. As a former college LB, I can assure you if it wouldn't fool me, it won't fool guys that play for LSU. It needs to go. The entire premise of a running QB, other than a Tim Tebow style, is to drop back, let the second and third levels bail out in coverage, let the pass rush commit to lanes and get up field in overpursuit, and choose a lane and take off vertically. It isnt pulling lineman that works.

Also it makes it foolish when LSU has possibly the best LB group in the country.

Their back four took our passing game game away and we couldn’t run the ball!

Pretty good round up of the night. Without a running game, we can not be elite. That's just the way it is.

Don't get me wrong, I dont think we really have a great running game, but at the same time its not that simple. I think we make a problem worse the way we handled it. Adam Randall isnt Mafah, but he's also not a liability. You cant run him 3 times or so in the first half, one go for 6 yards, totally abandon the run, then go try it again with freshman blocking for zero experience Eziommome (can never spell his name correctly). Then throw adams and Gid in and expect it to work. You need consistency. If we ran Adam 8-12 times, it wasn't working, and were looking for a spark or something and tried Gideon it makes sense. But this revolving door of inexperienced RBs isnt the answer. I think it takes a below average run game and makes it look atrocious on paper stat sheets. Our starting RB had 5 carries. Hardly enough to declare we suck at running the ball IMO. We just tried it a couple of times in weird down and distances and then said we'll Cade, go win the game. And get still had an opportunity at the end, despite everyone in the stadium knowing nothing but the pass was coming.

LSU's offense attacked our aggressive defense in the 2nd half. It's like our offense pulls a random play out of a hat.

It looks like Dabos offense again. Same play calling. Nothing new. Line was really bad. Cade stared down receivers all night. When he looked left then back right, the guy was wide open. It’s going to be a long season. Every team will play the same way against us, because we NEVER adjust.
