SC's lost ACC title, 800 rule, major infraction

Jul 1, 2018, 1:07 PM

All the talk on the board about the ACC's 800 rule led to discussion about SC leaving the league AND the major infraction SC earned for breaking the 800 rule. The SC major infraction and probation included SC forfeiting games and an ACC title for operating a slush fund out of the athletic department to pay ineligible athletes.

Included in that thread is a post linking a State paper article which seemed to me to whitewash what USC did. There is a line in there about a total of $75 for books and fees.

If anyone wants to read the actual description of what SC did and how they were punished, here's a link:

https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/miCaseView/report?id=101839

Here are the pertinent parts of the cheating SC did to enroll and play athletes who should not have been eligible:

1. In September 1965, a prospective student-athlete was admitted to the
University contrary to the regular published entrance requirements of the
institution.

WHEREAS, the Council has found the University of South Carolina to have violated the
principles governing financial aid [NCAA Constitution 3-4], in that:
1. During the college year, 1965-66, the University's then director of
athletics (also head football coach) provided three student-athletes, all ineligible
to receive institutional financial assistance, with cash, meal tickets and books
from personal funds or from sources under his control.
2. During the college year, 1965-66, and continuing through the first
semester of the 1966-67 college year, the educational expenses of a studentathlete
were paid by a corporation upon which the student-athlete was neither
naturally or legally dependent.
3. Institutional financial assistance awarded to student-athletes by the
University of South Carolina was not administered by the institution's regular
committee or agency responsible for awarding scholarships or grants-in-aid to
students generally.

W!~REAS, The Council has found the University of South Carolina to have violated the
provisions of NCAA Bylaw 6-2-(a), in that:
1. During the college year, 1965-66, the then director of athletics with the
assistance of the then business manager of athletics, created a secret fund,
reportedly to be used for entertainment purposes, including entertainment of high
school coaches.

You mean that this fine institution may have to give back its one and only conference title in football in over 100 years of playing the game ? Geez. So, every other generation of coot fans will possibly get to see a conference championship in football. That is a long, long time. Pretty bad athletic department they have there.

SC was stripped of their 1965 share of the ACC title for cheating. They subsequently won a legitimate ACC football title in 1969 which is the one they now claim.

FWIW, SC was forced to forfeit all the ACC games they won in 1965, including a win over Clemson. However, Frank Howard said ~~"They beat us on the field and we are not going to change the record or the way we keep score." That was laudable and sporting of him. However, technically, we have one more win in the series against SC than is reported and SC has one more loss against us than is reported.

Usually when a team is forced to vacate a win

the losing team isn't granted an extra win. Such as when GT vacated the 2009 ACC Championship Game, we weren't credited with a trophy.

The student-athlete in question was Mike Grosso. I almost got involved in a fight with him in a freshman game. Fortunately, others stepped between us before he could kill me.
