Will Paul Tyson count as a player scholarship? I thought Dabo described him as a grad assistant coach that could play due to having a year of eligibility left.

Wouldn’t Tyson just retain his position as a GA and whatever academic benefits it provides while playing as a walk on? Anyone know how it worked at USC when the GA became a QB?

Anybody enrolled in the school can play on the team, as long as they have eligibility left. Doesn't matter if you are a GA, a soccer player, a scholarship recruit, or some kid from the 5th floor of Byrnes playing video games.

Good job! I guess the net of it is, it depends on how many guys announce they are leaving as to how many portal opportunities we could have. We also are still chasing a couple of '24 HS recruits which could take up those 2 remaining scholarships. I know we have 1 OL set to announce shortly.

Looks like we only have 2 QBs on scholarship. We need another alternative, unless I missed a 3/4 string person. Then how do we add a WR and an OL. Man, 3s sure are tight.

Pride, Mukuba & Sage Ennius are players I was counting on, I’m sure Dabo knows the deal but I was looking forward to big things from them.
Sage is a good TE when healthy & great blocker, Prides potential is really high but he has to want it and Mukuba should be an All-American the next two years.

Sports-reference only reports appearances in which a stat is collected. It's a byproduct of how they scrape stat-sheets for data. It's great for counting stats but doesn't give a necessarily accurate picture of how many games were played.

Might be missing Trent Howard.
We have the Scholarship Breakdown by class and position on TigerNet. It kind of lets you see where the holes are in the classes where the portal could help.

Exactly the net of it.
Clemson doesn't run off non-productive players by not renewing their scholarship. This is a key difference with Clemson people have to get through their heads. Either kids stick around(not transferring) or they stick around and aren't contributing much. The kids on campus who come in and never see the field because perhaps "we missed on them in the initial evaluation" take up roster spots in other words. At other schools(think Spurrier and Meyer) those players who never elevate their games get asked to leave or to transfer. They could stay on campus put they would have to pay for school. They could play football as walk ons. But, those scholarships get yanked in order to give to another prospect.
Dabo's moral compass won't allow him to do that. He makes committiments to these players and their parents to see it all the way through. And, that is the difference.
These departures we see in other words especially now that very few Covid year/ Super Seniors remain are going to be huge for those wanting Clemson to utilize the portal.
Sometimes you take 2 steps back to go 4 feet forward. Hopefully for Clemson football that's the case.

By not encouraging a kid to move on to better scenary where they may excel
Dec 8, 2023, 11:33 AM

it could be a hinderance to their career. If there's a kid that will never break the 2 deep and we're stringing them along for depth instead of encouraging them to move on to a smaller school where they get more reps and development, that's a disservice to the kid.

Do you know that they haven't been told the TRUTH ?
Dec 14, 2023, 9:43 AM

Or is that just conjecture? You see it every year some leaving cause they're not starting, meanwhile there will always be some that somehow never make the 2 deep, but are doing everything required and busting it trying to get better, somehow they still want to be here and ARE Family.
Always agreed with Dabo's stance that Clemson doesn't run people off, doesn't CLEAR UP roster spots. however, it is a fine line between Student/athletes knowing they're secure and them slacking off cause there's no chance of losing their ride. Clemson had gotten to the point where that was happening.
IDIOTS suggesting some type of Roster Management are just that, IDIOTS. Dabo established in HIS building of Clemson that they didn't operate that way.
Everyone in the Portal "could have" stayed ,but were told how things were and THEY decided to go elsewhere

So you have no legitimate answer?
Dec 14, 2023, 10:30 AM

You're saying that all other programs tell kids that they're not going to make it and Clemson is the only program where the kid's say ok and just stay anyway?
No clue what thread you're talking about but you obviously haven't been on this site long enough if you think I'm a chicken.

Other schools cull the herd, players have no choice

Dabo tells them the truth, they CHOOSE whether to stay ,or not. The Coaching staff bears responsibility, they're the ones that recruited these guys.
Don't have to read other threads, ANYONE no knowing that by now is gotta be part Chicken and not ALL Tiger

Morgan Thomas removed John Williams but still has Tucker. I’ll remove John Williams since he’s a decent source.

Great work and all but scholarship numbers are a moot point nowadays. If a team wants a guy the NIL collective makes a deal to pay for their ride plus a salary. It doesn’t have to be a scholarship for a player to sign LOI.
85 isn’t enough. It was done to give parity in recruiting. Florida WAS the biggest hotbed of talent and once upon a time Florida, Miami, and FSU were grabbing up most of the talent. The NCAA took 15 scholarships from everyone assuring 45 sunshine state players went somewhere outside of Florida. I’d kinda like to see the number move back to 100. Many kids get a college education that would have had no other route to college.
