Any reason that this has “more validity” other than it makes more sense to you?

Virginia and UNC are both AAU schools. Gets the B1G into the southeast without compromising their AAU requirement. FSU and Clemson lock up the major football brands from the ACC.

Hmmm…, Nebraska and Notre Dame are not AAU members. So that “rule” is only enforced when convenient.
Fox is driving the Big 10. They want Clemson. Secondary benefit is ESPN’s nice contract with the ACC loses significant media value.

Nebraska was an AAU member when they joined originally.

Nebraska lost AAU status in the spring of 2011. Nebraska became a full member of the B1G in the summer of 2011. That statement is tenuous at best.

to losing AAU status. I don't know if it was too late for the Big Ten to walk back their offer at that point or they simply chose not to.

Nebraska was an AAU member when they joined the Big 10. They were voted out of the AAU a year or so later. Notre Dame gets a pass on everything.

Notre Dame is clearly a top 20 academic university. They have always had a mission that concentrates near totally on undergraduate education, not graduate level and is not a " research" institution, which is key element for AAU admission. They have been quite open in not seeking AAU recognition. As in many other ways, ND is our only true national university and prefers to retain their own values, whether others agree or not. Look at their notable grads list or check out their average graduate's starting salary. They are dong something right.

Not Clemson. I thought it was interesting, but I’m not going to bet money on it.

Big10 entry requires AAU membership prior to joining? Has that been stated by them or an assumption? I understand they are all currently members, but is it truly a requirement?

Yep, that's been my guess, but I don't think either conference does anything until the Notre Dame question is answered one way or another.

Why in the world would the SEC want VaTech and NC State?

Those two would do nothing more than decrease the per school revenue from the TV package.
They bring very little to the table.

despite wanting Clemson to join the B1G instead.
If Mario keeps recruiting like a mad man (and NIL money should ensure that happens), Miami might have a slim chance to join the SEC. I doubt it though because they don't have nearly the regional fan base of UF and FSU. The SEC won't need them at all if FSU is added.
UVA and UNC will fit the B1G like a glove.
I don't know if this "rumor" is legit or not. It could be someone stating something very logical and calling it a rumor for clickbait purposes.
