Your tomatoes look beautiful!!!!

I tried planting tomatoes in a 5 gallon bucket for the first time this year, and I'm having terrible luck. Every tomato that I have seen so far has had rot on the bottom of them. I'll never make this mistake again. Put them in what God gave us to grow in, or IMO, don't bother!!!

I have 5 plants, 2-Big Boy, 2-Whopper, 1-Goliath. As these are in pots, frequent water is needed. The deal for better maters is constant moisture, not wet/dry repeat. To help I use this 30gallon tub on a timer. Water is pumped from the lake using solar panels.
I use pots on the dock as my yard is all shade. I mix in Dolomite which wards off end rot.

There were a few Big Boys, Whoppers, and Goliaths as well, but most were not.

If pigs are so smart, why do 66% of them use weak and inferior materials during construction?

I have to admit, you know how to live, modestly, sustainably, and surrounded by nature.

Kudos my friend.

Hey Allin, what you are describing sounds like a condition known as "blossom end rot."

It's actually due to a calcium deficiency. Erratic watering can contribute to it. Try using a fertilizer with as much calcium in it as you can find.

I had that problem once, and since switching to high calcium fertilizer have never had an issue.

I also grow in large planters...mine look good but are nowhere near the size of Tugaloo's.

Next year mix Dolomite in the soil a few weeks before planting be it ground or pot.
I took the Master Gardener courses at Clemson, but it was Pop who taught me to grow things as his generation grew plants to survive - they used egg shells.

I think you can fix that blossom rot on tomatoes with some calcium. I know you can add some crushed egg shells and maybe a couple of Tums.

I'm very jealous Tug. I can't grow a tomato anymore. Some type of virus kills them every year. I put in sterilized soil, change locations, fertilize as directed and still can't grow them. Planted 18 plants this year and I'm down to 6. Will be pulling 2 more tomorrow. Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

I am no expert. My advise would be to take soil samples.
Clemson will do this for free:

I have a web page here as to me fooling around with pots:

Tugaloo River which along with the Seneca forms Lake Hartwell.
I can take my old fishing boat to a game, but it would be a long trip.
