Record before and after Brent Venables

From Chat GPT.
Before Brent Venables joined as DC (through the end of 2011 season) • Clemson’s head coach: Dabo Swinney (interim starting mid-2008, full-time from 2009). • Seasons covered: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011. • Year-by-year records: • 2008: 7–6 overall. • 2009: 9–5 overall (not explicitly cited above, but part of Swinney’s overall record). • 2010: 6–7 overall. • 2011: 10–4 overall. • Aggregate (2008–2011): • Wins: 7 + 9 + 6 + 10 = 32 • Losses: 6 + 5 + 7 + 4 = 22 • Record: 32–22 over those four seasons.
⸻
During Brent Venables as Defensive Coordinator (2012–2021) • Venables joined ahead of the 2012 season and served through the 2021 season. • We can tally annual records via noted season summaries: • 2012: 11–2 • 2013: 11–2 • 2014: 10–3 • 2015: 14–1 • 2016: 14–1 • 2017: 12–2 • 2018: 15–0 • 2019: 14–1 • 2020: 10–2 • 2021: 10–3 or maybe 10–4? Actually 2021 overall record is often listed as 10–3, but some references show 10–4 including bowl. For consistency, Sports-Reference lists Clemson’s 2021 as 10–3; however, the total Swinney record (181–49) might include bowls. I’ll count 10–3.
Let’s sum these: • Wins: 11 + 11 + 10 + 14 + 14 + 12 + 15 + 14 + 10 + 10 = 121 • Losses: 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 17
So 121–17 over those ten seasons (2012–2021).
Summary Comparison
Period Seasons Record Win % Before Venables (2008–2011) 4 seasons 32–22 ~59.3% With Venables (2012–2021) 10 seasons 121–17 ~87.7%
Key Insights • Clemson dramatically improved during Venables’s tenure as DC, going from mid-50s win percentage to nearly 90%. • The defense under Venables was a major factor in Clemson becoming a national championship contender, including titles in 2016 and 2018, and regular CFP appearances.

And that's why I instinctively knew when ne boarded that plane on that Sunday and left for Oklahoma, i knew our team would never be the same. He was the energy and the leader of the team. He did not accept anything except 120% effort and was ALWAYS in the game and could make instant in game adjustments. The offense knew he had their backs.

Yeah, I have to agree with you. But I would add to this discussion that CBV and Jeff Scott were outstanding at identifying talent and once said talent got to campus, they knew how to develop it. Not only how to identify and develop, but seemed to have the inate ability on when to use which piece.

17 losses in 10 seasons and now 13 losses in last 3 seasons plus first 3 games of this season. Venables isn't the only factor but he's a big part of it.

Since 2021

Here’s Clemson’s football record for each season since 2021 (overall W–L): • 2021: 10–3 • 2022: 11–3 • 2023: 9–4 • 2024: 10–4
⸻
Overall record from 2021 through 2024: • Total wins: 10 + 11 + 9 + 10 = 40 • Total losses: 3 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 14
So, Clemson’s cumulative record over those four seasons is 40–14. Let me know if you’d like breakdowns by conference games, bowl games, or other details!

I have to admit I was surprised by these numbers. The cold hard truth is for the last 5 seasons (including this one since we already have 2 losses) Clemson has not been elite, but instead is living off its successes just prior to this run of good-not-great football.

The players feared Venables. These high paid patty cake kitty cats don’t give a darn. Btw the tackling has not improved a whiff. D-backs don’t wrap up. Vaunted D Line not dominant. Excluding Brown, backers too slow.

Napier 19-15; 1 ACC title game
Morris 41-11; 1ACC champ
Tony/Jeff 70-5; 5 ACC and 2 national titles
Tony alone 20-5; 1 ACC champ
Streeter 11-3: ACC champ
Riley 20-10; 1 ACC champ
Think this is all correct. Morris didn't coach bowl game his final season

All true, but the offenses we had in those years were elite which makes life easier for the defenses.

2021: 10–3 or maybe 10–4? Actually 2021 overall record is often listed as 10–3, but some references show 10–4 including bowl. For consistency, Sports-Reference lists Clemson’s 2021 as 10–3; however, the total Swinney record (181–49) might include bowls. I’ll count 10–3.
Just curious, but what sources refer to 2021 as 10-4?? You guys know I'm all about accuracy here, but you lost to UGA, NC St, & Pitt that year and won the Bowl vs Iowa St. You were 10-3. Where is that 4th loss showing up?

Yes, I said that. The OP mentioned that "some references show 10–4 including bowl." My question is what are those references?

The only way Clemson will have a spot in future playoff contention will be to have a generational talent at QB. I'm convinced of that.
When will we see another such talent at QB like Watson or Lawrence ? Anybody's guess
I think all Clemson fans realize this and in our heart of hearts and it's the source of most of the angst we see as Clemson navigates the troubled waters ahead that is now college football.
